    Hey everyone,

I have a 1999 Tacoma v6 5 speed standard and whenever I push in the clutch, my car makes a whining, groaning, vibrating sound. Additionally, when I try to shift into either 1st or reverse, when I release the clutch, it feels like I'm only 10% connected to the transmission. This means that the car will barely move, and if I give it any throttle, the whining groaning sound turns into what sounds like a grinding and screeching of gears. I have no clue what the deal is or where to start looking for problems, so if anyone has any ideas, they would be much appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Steve

I'm not sure.. the car has 215,xxx miles and I bought it with 198,xxx about 1.5 years ago and I've never replaced. the guy I bought it from mentioned something about having it replaced maybe 60,000 miles before he sold it?

I'm betting it needs a new clutch then, since there's about 150k on the current one. That's about the average lifespan of a clutch. See what some others on here might think though.

Is the noise in this video the noise your talking about? If that's the noise your talking about, then I sparyed some dry film lube on the areas that he did several days ago and my annoying squeak has been gone so far. I can't help with the reverse issue.

My noise has come back about 2 weeks after I sprayed dry film lube on the area inside the boot.

This is the throw out bearing - presses against the pressure plate when the pedal is pressed.

It means you need a new clutch sometime soon. Depending on how bad, it could still last a while.

Thanks for the response Andy. So this noise is coming from the throw out bearing? Dealer records show that my clutch was replaced 60k ago(original clutch lasted 233K). Maybe they just replaced the clutch disk and not the throw out bearing. This may also mean that the throwout bearing may be original?

I'd guess they did replace it - although the original lasted forever, I don't think 60k is unreasonable for a clutch - especially if it wasn't OEM.

I had one that I drove with the bearing noise for over a year. Not a death sentence, but I'd start thinking about it.

I'm surprised that I was only able to get 60K from these OEM parts before getting this noise.
According to dealer records, I was able to find that the following parts were replaced at 233K at dealership:
    BEARING,BAL,12,32,F 903631200277
    REMAN DISC CLUTCH 312503540084
    REMAN CLUTCH COVER 312103520084

Apparently I didn't really read your post the first time. The whining is the least of your problems. You need a new clutch.

Clutch life greatly varies by driver and the use of the vehicle. I would not consider 60k miles unreasonable...

Opps, I'm not the OP. Apparently I accidentally high jacked this thread. I chimed in about the squeeking of the pedal which is the only problem I'm having.

Squeak is an easy fix. Just grease up the pivot on the clutch fork. You will have to pull the rubber boot where it goes through the bellhousing.

I tried dry lube file. I'll try spray grease next. Thanks.

Spray grease fixed it deader than a hammer. Thanks. :)

Fluid film works great for this.

The spray grease I used lasted two days. I sprayed Fluid film on yesterday. Thanks for the tip. :)

How has that Fluid Film been holding up? My 04 just got the Creeky pop to it.

My 04's clutch pedal/assembly goes through phases....I swear it's like a teenager. Some days/weeks it's creaky/popping and then it goes for days/weeks where it's smooth and quiet like it was brand new.

I hit it with Tri-Flo lube every so often and I think it helps.
