So if i drive at 10 km/h and hit my brakes hard enough to load up my suspension and nose dive (doesn't take much brake force to do it) I get this clunking noise which i believe is from the front end.

If i go forward again from a stop and hit my brake again it won't make the noise or it will be alot more subtle.

Now if from that point i put my truck in reverse and hit brakes i get a loud clunk as well. I can go forward and back and make the noise happen over and over.

At higher speeds i can hit the brakes hard and it will not make the clunking noise

I brought the truck to Toyota yesterday and they had the wheels off. They said it was the brake pads moving forward and back on the caliper. I am having a hard time with that considering that if i don't load up the suspension it doesn't make the noise along with the aspect of no noise at high speeds

Has anyone had this issue before?

Truck has 48000 K on it and has only been doing this for last 4000- 5000K
    Stock TRD Pro suspension.

this sounds like the brake pads shifting in the calipers syndrome, 2nd gen trucks do this too mine clacks the first time I apply the brakes or reversing the truck. this doesn't harm anything but gets your attention and becomes annoying but theres nothing u can really do to alleviate it. only time it will go away temporarily is when u replace the front pads.

Is the noise like a continuous clunking as you're slowing down or just a single clunk?

a single CLACK, the first time I hit the brakes then it doesn't do it again while braking again

Make sure both your brake caliper bolts are tight. I had one back out and made a similar sound because it was slamming into my wheel whenever I hit the brakes.

Mine does it too, when I back up and then go forward. But when you use the brakes harder under weight to stop, it does not do it. Annoying.

Same thing here. I have a 2017 OR with 51000 miles on it. This clicking noise when I brake only happens between 5 to 10 mph. I took it to the dealership and the first thing they told me without looking at the truck was that this is normal. They say the pads are moving and that this happens on camarys as well. So they looked at it and came back of course with we could not find any problems. Yea right. Looks like I am going to have to till I get a brake job to get the issue fixed

To verify the noise is coming from the pads you can insert a business card peice into the pad holders to take up the slack. Go drive it and see if the noise is still there. At least it would give you peice of mind. Also adding lube to the pads decreased my noise for awhile until the grease wore away.

Well all the responses eases my mind that it isn't something beyond the pads shifting.

    Thanks for the info everyone

    Cheers

So my mechanic found the source of my clunk. They checked the brakes and driveline but tuened out mine was the steering rack! It would make the clunk once in forward and once again in reverse, so once it clunked in one direction it stopped until going the other direction.

He was going to replace the bushings but they sent him the wrong part number. In lieu of this he tightened up the rack and greased everything and the damn clunk has stopped. If it comes back I’ll replace the bushings. Clunk is completely gone, I’ve driven around all day trying to get it to clunk to no avail.

    Hope this helps others.

I might have to take a good look at my steering for good measure.

I get something similar when driving under 25 and coming to a stop...but it's definitely more of a transmission thing.
