Has anyone experienced a clunk noise when shifting into drive from park (or any gear)? Is that normal for tacoma's?

I use the ebrake and it happens rarely. But my wife pulled the truck out of the driveway today after an oil change and released the ebrake before she started it, clunked into reverse. Pretty common I'd say.

I use the ebrake too but I was wondering if it was normal since it is my first tacoma and first time owning a truck. Thank you for your response.

If you're engaging or disengaging the parking brake incorrectly, it can bind the parking pawl in the transmission.
Engage: set parking brake in R/D with foot brake applied, shift to P, release foot brake.
Disengage: foot brake applied in P, release parking brake, shift to R/D, release foot brake.

Other possibilities; loose leaf spring u-bolts or front brake pad slap.

My 2020 does that. I can put it in reverse to back out of garage and don't hear anything, then shift to drive and I can hear a slight clunk. Never touched my ebrake, so it's got nothing to do with that. Been meaning to take it into dealer and have them look at it.

This happens to my 2019 but only going to drive. If I wait in neutral for a few moments it seems to lessen the clunk

My 2020 does it. My 2012 I had for 8 years did it. They seem to do it less if you let the engine idle in park for a few seconds and idle down after starting up.

    Lots, straight from the factory.
My driveway is steep. I mean like 30* steep. I back in. I set the e-brake while still in reverse. Then shift to park. when starting, I shift from park to drive, then release the e-brake. No clunks.

Release the e-brake before shifting from park, yeah, it makes a bad, bad clunk.

    A few.
Resurrecting this thread because Ive been experiencing the same. In my case I usually only hear it on a cold start when the truck sits overnight or sits long enough to get cold and is on fast idle when started. These trucks seem to take longer to drop down off of fast idle than other vehicles Ive owned.

I was starting to wonder if I had a bad universal joint or transmission mount

This is a noise that is normal. The noise is generated when the driveshaft is loaded up in one direction and then spins in the other direction. It is free play being taken up quickly in the ring and pinion gear and then transmitting into the long hollow drive drive that amplifies it. It is more common on automatics because of firmer clutch engagement when shifting between forward and reverse or park into either gear at higher idle or no park brake use.

This is not a Tacoma thing either, my motorhome does it, and it is quite loud with it's rear shaft assembly about as long as a Tacoma!
