I am getting an unusual clunk when my suspension is flexing during normal driving conditions. For instance, when I pull into a driveway with a slope and bump at bottom I hear it when making turn in when rear tires go over bump. Doesn't seem to do it when it's just straight on with say speed bumps. Don't have anything big in bed storage boxes.

Came across a post with some saying had similar problem and they said could be loose bed bolts, loose spare or loose u-bolts on axle. I will look into all these but any other ideas on this?

Sounds like the suspension to me. Have dakars and OME shocks 2 years old. Hoping nothing is wrong. It's my daily driver so I don't wheel it all too hard so def not from abuse.

    Thanks in advance!

    AC

Check your bolts for the leaf springs. I left the one closest to my fuel tank loose and it flunked every time I flexed.

Thanks. Actual bolts holding leaf pack together or the u-bolts?

Might want to double check your bed bolts too. They can produce similar results.

Around 90 ft/lbs sounds good. Hears the catch though. You need to tighten the nut. Not the bolt side. There are barbs on the bolt side. I usually use my big ass 19 mm box wrench and tighten until its not moving. Good luck.

Good afternoon, I have the same clunking noise when the rear suspension is flexing when incorporating (sideways) in our out of a driveway. I have 3" OME leafs, springs and shocks and everything has been checked for any loose bolt. Also, I´ve checked (uninstalled and installed twice) the gas tank (Long Ranger) to see any hot spots with the chassis, lines or parts; the bed, the spare tire, changed the muffler, to name just a few. The sound is driving me crazy and the dealership first assured me it was the gas tank, which it wasn´t.
I read in another thread that maybe the clunking noise if deriving from the rear wheel axel bearing retainer which allows the wheel hub to slip, hence causing the clunk noise. I haven´t checked it but as soon as I do I will report back my findings. Also, I am tempted to uninstall the OME leafs and reinstall the Toyota originals just to discard.

I had this issue with my Dakars. My clunk was caused by side-to-side play in the leaf packs where they bolt to the frame. I installed some Energy Suspension poly bushings and that filled the gap and solved my problem.

Thanks, I will inspect the leaf packs to see if their is some wiggle causing the noise. Hope to be it.

Get a crow bar or big flat head screwdriver and pry the military wrap part of the leaf packs side to side in the mounts on the frame. You might be able to make them pop back and forth.

I had the same thing years ago when one of my OEM shocks blew. I was living in Alaska, it was winter, and I didn't have a garage, so I never did a bunch of thorough troubleshooting. Eventually I noticed extra road grime and shit on one of my rear shocks, shook the shock around by hand, and it was pretty obviously blown. Luckily changing rear shocks is easy, even laying on the built up ice in my drive ways in the cold.

I still get the clunk every now and then, but now I think it’s due to my rear shackle bushing being stock and not ES. I may try changing these next time my leaf springs are out. Just need a press...

If you have Dakars. Those bushings arent pressed in. They will just pop out.

Had the same noise. Was a blown out shock.

Chock the wheels and have a fat friend jump around in the bed and see what you can hear or see moving.

It’s never a bad idea to crawl around and check the torque of suslension and driveline bolts.

ive been chasing this for 2 years and i pretty much gave up. i have dakars with the energy suspension bushings...everything is
tight....it just clunks once in awile...also when going up and down driveways. it allmost feels like something shifts and than moves back but i cant for the life of me figure it out. i did notice that when the weather warms up it allmost goes away completely...it'll sometimes go months in the summer time without hearing it. in the winter time though its pretty much there all the time. its unusual and very annoying but, i deal with it.

Spray some lube on your leaf packs, as much between the leafs as you can. See if that changes it temporarily. If it does there are a number of threads here for fixing squeaky leaf packs.

So I have a clunk. I have had it since the truck was new. It is not suspension as I just replaced all the suspension with billies and OME and the clunk is still there.

It sounds like it is coming from the gas tank area, it only happens when I am going slightly to fast over bumps. In the winter here the roads are so bad that you are almost always going to fast lol. I thought it was me just being dumb and going to fast with the stock suspension and hitting the bump stops, but the exact same noise still happens with the new suspension and Timbren active bump stops.

I am going to strap a Gopro under the truck and figure out exactly what it is.

Thats for squeaky leaf springs which i dealt with when i first got the springs. this is an actual "clunk clunk" noise...completely different.

I have a clunk sound coming from the rear end as well. Usually when in reverse, turning up into a bump. I have OME Dakar leaf pack as well. My thoughts were something with the bushings in the leaf springs as well, but have yet to replace them.

after alot of reading and trying different things, im starting to think its something with the Dakar springs. the bushings actually made my truck feel a little tighter and quieter over all but did nothing for the clunk.
