Sounds like a bad CV joint. They normally click when they go bad...

possibly one of your diff side gears has a broken tooth but its not normal hearing this at highway speeds going in a straight line .If you are hearing the noise as you spin the axle with the front end jacked up and the tire removed , I would guess that your 4x4 selector fork on the front axle is partially applied . Have you tried 4x4 since the noise started ?

Then I doubt its an axle problem .brb .I really doubt your issue is Constant velocity joint failure

Broken/damaged CV doesn't always result from a split boot.
Takes 15 minutes to pull the CV. Just pull it and spin the hub again and see if it still clicks.

That's for a first gen but it's the same except second gens have two large bolts on the LCA/LBJ instead of 4.

You'll need a 35 mm socket for the axle nut.

So I'm glad I found this thread. I just replaced my driver side CV axle on my 04 Tacoma and it is making a clicking sound (after replacement) I took everything back apart and noticed it's clicking back and forth at the diff. So I hit the end of the axle with a hammer to make sure it was drivin all the way in, and after a second test drive, it still clicks when I hit bumps while turning (like into my driveway). Could this mean my front gear needs replacement?

I have a similar rattling sound coming from what sounds like the passenger front wheel well. Sound is only noticeable when I turn right.

I don't have the equipment to do more than an oil change - any ideas on what I should tell the shop to look for to keep the labor costs as low as possible?

Also looking at replacing a 3inch lift that I recently found out was removed from the front (but they left the blocks in the back) - worth it to schedule all this work at once?

    Thanks

Revive a dead thread. I'm having this issue and have replaced the cv axle already but still hear it. Starts to get noticeable at 20 then louder at 45 and when I apply breaks at higher speeds its really noticeable.
