Tried starting my tacoma today, only 27K, and all I get is a clicking noise. It’s a 2017 so almost 4 yrs old. Thought maybe battery, but I can run radio and all lights without cranking it. Any thoughts before I reach out to dealer?

Sounds like a battery to me. I just replaced my battery from 2017 yesterday.

    Probably battery.

low batteries can run lights and radio with low cold cranking amps, but not turn the engine

Yeah, this is most likely just a battery on it's last leg. An old battery can certainly have enough juice to run accessories, but not enough to start the truck.

That’s what I was thinking. Did you have a clicking noise too? I had the battery sign come on in accessory mode, meaning system not charging, but a dead battery could cause that too I suppose.

Mine was clicking and failed to start. Eventually it did quit clicking though.

The clicking noise is common. It's definitely the battery. Clicking noise for me happens almost every time the battery has gone out for me in various vehicles I've owned. Not uncommon.

Just jump it, if it fires right up, there's a very very good chance it's the battery. 4 years is about all you'll get out of a battery,,, often less. Those low miles are only harder on a battery, having to sit for periods of time, then discharge even more to start.

Your battery is dead. Quick trip to the parts store for a new one and you'll be good to go.

You could jump it or get a battery tender (a low level charger for about $30) to get you a few days.

For the record, I'd save that money and get the battery tested at AutoZone or another store and put the money toward a new battery. Luckily it's summer, if it were cold, it would be worse on the battery regarding starting.

Yep, battery heat is just as hard on them as cold. Besides there are many more electronics putting a constant low drain on it with the low mileage.

I think Wally World has a 2 year battery for like $60

Steves probably right on. But go for there best I believe for about 40 or 50 more you can get one with a free 3yr Total replacement warranty. And an additional 3yr prorated.

Thanks everyone. I changed battery out today and everything looked like it was working fine. However, if I push the ignition twice to go into accessory mode I keep getting “check charging system”. Thoughts? I’ll prob just call dealer tomorrow, but interested to see if anyones knows about this.

The battery won't charge when you are in accessory mode because the engine isn't running. Are you sure you're in accessory mode and not in Ignition/Run mode? That's what it sounds like. Which of course is different than start mode.

If you push ignition button twice, everything comes on such as radio/control windows, and the truck doesn’t crank. Isn’t that accessory mode? The truck isnt running, but maybe its something different.
