Saw a relatively inexpensive lockable gas cap on TW and purchased since we don't have a lockable door and have seen people get their tanks tampered with as a result. Of course it SAID it wouldn't cause CELs, but it did.

Well the day after I installed it, I got into my truck to a host of codes. CEL, etc.,

    CODES: P0445 and P0441

I put the stock cap back on, and was able to clear the pending/confirmed codes through an OBD app (Fusion iOS) and they have not returned since but of course it's not that easy to clear the permanent ones. Aside from techstream, is there another test pattern I should be aware of to clear them so it doesn't still have record of a LARGE LEAK in my emissions? Won't be an issue for a few months when I have to do my annual smog check but will certainly want it cleared before then.

I believe that the memory is purged of those codes after 50 drive cycles.

You could try disconnecting the battery and pressing the brake pedal for a minute?

I always thought you had to disconnect the battery "-" cable and then try to start it 3 times..!

Use torque. You'll have to buy a OBDII bluetooth scanner. But you can literally wipe it with a press of a button.

I did a bit of research of codes.

The FSM will list the Universal Trip Drive Pattern. This list the procedure on how to drive the vehicle after resetting the code. If the pattern is performed and the code does not come back, the code is archived.

Here is an example of a UTDP:

Typically, this Universal Trip Drive Pattern starts off by clearing all the DTCs so that only the Permanent DTC remains (always refer to service information for applicable information and procedures).

Then turn the ignition ON, start the vehicle and let it idle for at least 30 seconds. Then, without cycling the key, drive the vehicle for at least five minutes at more than 40 km/h. Then (again without cycling the key) let the vehicle idle for at least 30 seconds before shutting it OFF. The whole drive cycle must take at least 10 minutes. After performing a Universal Trip Drive Pattern, the computer clears the code, since it’s “seen” that the problem is fixed and not reoccurring.

I don't know the exact procedure for a 2017, but your question made me want to research more in depth. I was on my phone earlier and in a hurry.

    Thanks for the question.

It is "permanent" DTCs that cause the malfunction indicator to light, "pending" codes that do not. Clearing the DTCs with a scan tool clears both--however doing so will also set DTC P1000 (OBDII Monitor Tests Not Complete). As was alluded to above P1000 is reset when a required number of "driving cycles"have been completed.

Each manufacturer and model has different monitor readiness test cycles, however this is a generic sort of sequence that works with many vehicles:
    • Fuel tank at 1/2.
    • Engine cold start idle for 10 minutes.
    • Drive at highway speed 55-60 mph with steady throttle for 16 minutes.
    • Return to idle for three minutes with engine running in park.
    • Drive again at medium speed 40 mph for eight minutes.
    • Return to idle for three minutes.
    • Repeat next day.
Check P1000 being set (some scan tools just call this OBD Readiness or the like), if P1000 is not set you are all set for the emission inspection--through depending on how picky your state is it could still fail a real sniff test...

No vehicle inspections here in Florida--at all...

Thanks for the tips - I have an OBD scanner and app and that allowed me to clear the pending ad confirmed (which killed the CEL light) so only thing remaining was the permanent. I've had over 3/4 tank the whole time so perhaps need to get it a bit lower and perform the trip. Been in the city since it happened so my steady drives are generally no more than 5-10 minutes before stops, exits, turns. Something to try though and I appreciate the valuable tips!

Thx - I fumbled through the FSM but had a thought you'd point me to the right spot ;)
