I recently purchased this rebuilt engine and noticed that the injector holes, intake manifold, exhaust manifold surface, oil filter surface, and oil cooler surface are all painted.

Should I remove the paint from these surfaces before installing everything? If so, will getting paint in the engine be an issue or will it just burn up? The injector holes seem nearly impossible to clean without getting paint in the engine.

yeah, pretty sure those shouldn't be painted.

It doesn't look like they masked ANYTHING off.

I would be highly suspect of the quality of that rebuild... who did that?

If you do remove the paint, I'd use a shop vac
    to pick up debris.
Try using a rag with solvent to clean paint.

    "Toyota Engines" in Oregon.

They have great reviews and offer a 3 year unlimited milage warranty, the most generous warranty out of any rebuild company that I've seen. They were recommended to me by a few mechanics and friends that have had good experiences with them.

I asked the builder about the exhaust manifold surface when he dropped the engine off and he said to just put the gasket on over it. I didn't notice the injector holes were painted at that time, so I wasn't able to ask about that. I don't really like the idea of putting all these components that need to seal on over paint, hence why I'm asking for a second opinion on here.

You should see some of the paint work on domestic v8 garage rebuilds.

Sounds like a good plan, I'll give it a try.

I've seen plenty of businesses go down hill that I'd no longer send them my trash, let alone trust them with my vehicle.

Regardless if you heard good things about them, it is odd to me that they would be okay with throwing a gasket over paint like that. IFAIK, you never paint a gasket mating surface. That's just seems fishy. Plus the fact that you can see they didn't really mask off very much when they painted the block and heads. Just seems like lazy work.

I would honestly take it back and make THEM do it. You paid for that motor, you shouldn't have to do a bunch of extra work to it.

I second this opinion, I've rebuilt 2 stroke power equipment where cheaper brands paint the cylinder jug and didn't mask off the bottom of the clamshell because "the permatex seals it" and after a couple run cycles are running like shit and weeping fuel mix out of the bottom of the jug .. granted they use cheap cheap paint that bubbles at the first hint of heat
