does anyone know how to check the front brake pad thickness without taking the tires off?

I've been trying to with a cell phone camera but can't get enough light to shine on the inside of the caliper.

I think you can jack up your truck and take the wheel off in less than 5 minutes.

ended up going to pepboys where they do free brake inspections. They let you go into the bay so you can see the pads and stuff first hand.
