For some reason the steering angle sensor's fail when batteries are dying, I've seen this a few times and nothing works except replacing the sensor.

That said, start with a VSC Zero point if your scan tool can perform operations.

    If not, read up.

Has anyone found a solution to this? Is replacing the sensor a viable fix to this error code?

Having a tech like you here is second to none. First hand experience. And with that, I won’t be pushing my luck on the battery. :hattip:

10/11/17 I reckon it’s time. I’ve read about you folks going with an agm. But with the amount of time this battery gave, I figure why fix what ain’t broke.

I usually change around 5 years as well, I'm currently on year 4 of my personal battery and its sweating battery acid, so I'm tempted to go AGM as well, but who knows what 2024 will have for me haha.

There it is. No wonder there was buildup under the battery holder where the metal was bare. In two areas, both had either the paint stripped by the chemical reaction, or the holder was poorly painted. Looks like an AGM is in the works. Didn’t know about battery sweating. I better fully read up on the agm’s.

Any tips on replacing the sensor? I had drained my 2 yr old agm I guess with my frig and sitting over the weekend. Took it in to a local shop and requested them to try reset/calibrate or confirm a bad sensor and they did so I’ll be buying a sensor, doing the install and take it to the local shop to recalibrate.

Once they are fried they there’s nothing you can do, a zero point dosent do anything to steering angle only the yaw and accel sensor get zeroed out the steering angle is self calibrating every time the truck is turned on

unfortunately oem sensors come with the clock spring so it’s a pricey sensor to buy doing the work requires airbag removal in the steering wheel .

I wanted confirmation before buying the sensor and I was suggested to unplug the clock spring and sensor connectors. It didn’t hurt to try and I was able to do it by just taking the lower steering column plastic off. Don’t have a scanner or equipment to do the calibration so took it to a local shop to test

was asking him for any tips on replacement since he’s done a few and it’s what he does- there’s always tips and tricks of the trade.

I did not know that the oem part was sensor and clock spring assembly, it makes more since at the 300-350$ “discounted”price

I am a mechanic , and recently went thru hell figuring out my SAS issue so I’m just trying to save you time and money ,

the steering angle sensor is attached the clock spring it’s snaps on to it there’s no way to do it without removing the airbag and steering wheel , Toyota does not sell the sas separately, DO NOT BUY a aftermarket sensor on eBay they don’t work properly the main tip here is disconnect battery prior to doing this work wait 5min after disconnecting battery before you remove the orange and black tab on the steering wheel air bag .

I’m looking into the Toyota online parts store- it’s coming up as TOYOTA 8924B-0R020 but it also says steering sensor w LO. Hoping it’s a 1 part for all trims kind of thing and it’s the right one

Best to call dealer and confirm part number they can match with ur vin , I paid 1000$ for mine with clock spring but I’m in Canada things are bit different here with pricing and sometimes even parts aren’t available in Canadian markets

An update and to correct a wrong. Toyota does in fact sell just the steering angle sensor (standalone w/out clock-spring). Part number, vin verified, was 8924b-0r020 for me

local dealer had 1 in stock and price matched online parts store- cheapest I could find was 315 plus tax (msrp 460).

It had a diagram that mentioned using a locking pin, I guess you enter into the clockspring to hold in place. Any tips/tricks removing without?
*edit* figured it out, the locking pin is basically for if you were to replace only the clockspring and then transfer the steering angle sensor over without changing it’s position. The locking pin is also the white piece already on the new sensor keeping its position (remove once attached to the clockspring).
