Hello, I have a 2006 Tacoma 4x4 access cab. The check engine light came on the other day. After scanning the code P2402, P043F, P2419 P043E P2401, I see most people changing their vapor canister. So I cleared the codes making sure it wasn’t just the gas cap. 2 days later they all show up again! I reset the codes one more time and give it a day or two then decide to head to my local dealer to get a replacement Vapor canister.

After resetting that second time I decide to keep the box in the back seat of my truck till the light comes on again. Why not? But after 2 weeks the check engine light hasn’t come back on???

Change it anyway or wait for the check engine light to come on?
    Thanks

The test only runs under a certain set of conditions. You probably have not met those conditions is all. I’m sure your monitor code is not ready for the vapor canister.

They are also 2 trip codes which means they have to run and fail twice in a row to turn on the CEL
The EVAP monitor has quite alot of conditions that have to be met before it will run although it can be forced to run with a bi-directional scan tool at any time.

Cold weather inhibits the test as well.

You need a canister 100% based on those codes.

Thanks for all the info! I’m changing it!
I was also told that the reason these canisters fail is because I’m over filling the gas tank. Makes sense I guess. Anyone else ever heard this???

Yes overfilling with gas will swell up the charcoal and rupture the membrane that contains it which will let it get everywhere, haven't seen it on a Toyota yet but I have done alot of 07-13 GM trucks and SUVs and it is a royal pain when the charcoal gets stuck in all the lines to get it all cleaned out.

More common it seems on the Tacomas is water getting in them, you may want to check the hose that goes from the filter to the canister and from the filter to the filler neck. Also check the filter for cracks.

Well thought I was out of the woods. Went to change the canister and it’s too big to come out between the bed and the cross member not to mention I couldn’t get the hose off from the tank to the canister.
Looks like some are loosing the bolts and tilting the bed for access. anyone have some photos of this being done? I’m sure I can figure out the hose but a little Leary of tilting the bed with a 2x4.

You can cut the support in the bed too if you like it will make it easier. Removing the bed or jacking it up with a 2x4 isn’t too hard I wouldn’t even worry about disconnecting the any wires.

It should come out with the spare down, I just did one on an 08 double cab at the shop. I thought it wouldn't come out either but I unbolted the bracket that holds the ABS wires and took the filter off and it came right out.
Hoses were kind of a PITA to get off though.

I had the spare tire out but still wouldn’t budge. I would have taken the brackets off but was afraid I would get stuck. Not wanting to remove anything off the new one. But I’m going to try and tilt the bed tomorrow. It seems really straight forward. I saw a couple of YouTube videos where some Chevy guys did it to replace the fuel pump. Seems like the easiest way. Plus I can probably get my hands on the line from the tank which I could NOT get to come off.

Interesting I didn't have any issues getting that one out, maybe Access Cab is different.
Providing the bed bolts come out beds are easy to pull if they are empty.

what about the gas cap? Will I have to drill the rivets out and re-rivet it in? Most of the videos just show pushing it down.
On the box, it appears to be twice as large as the ones I’ve seen on YouTube.

Any suggestions on getting the vapor line that comes from the gas tank?

Use a pick and push the tabs. A small lubricant helps

Not sure I haven't had the bed off a Tacoma yet.

I removed it after I got the canister off the studs where I could manuver it around, it's still kind of a pain to push the tabs in. If it's full of dirt you may have to take some compressed air and get the dirt cleaned out of it to get it to release.

Remove gas cap. Filler neck pops out from behind bed side.

    Thanks!
I think I have the info I have enough information on the bed removal now. Looks like I will need to take the neck loose from underneath and it should tilt up enough to get the box out. I read a post where someone cut the ribs with a sawzall but I’m definitely Not doing that!
Hahah broke one of the studs but that’s an easy fix! Too much rust.
