I'm sitting on the shoulder waiting for Toyota Care roadside assistance. Driving to work this morning and my check engine light came on and then a minute later my trac off light turn on. What are the chances this is the CPS issue?

I have a 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport with 6,014 miles.

Did your truck stall? Or did you pull over not wanting to risk further damage?

Pulled over to not risk any damage. I figured I had free Toyota Care roadside assistance so I'd rather get a tow than turn around and drive 15 miles to the nearest Toyota dealer. Plus I was on the road at 5am so I knew the Toyota dealer wasn't going to be open that early.

My 2006 did that when an o2 sensor went out, not sure if it’d be the same on the newer trucks though

It depends on what the code is, could also be a loose connector.

    Any recent service lately?

No new service since 18 month Toyota care service in May. I filled up my gas tank 80 miles ago.

EDIT: Just checked my trip odometer since last gas fill up it was 104 miles.

Finally got it to the dealer. The service writer was annoying. I told her I read about a lot of issues with bad CPS and she said she never heard of that issue and never had a Tacoma in for that and she didn't like to diagnose issues based off what customers read. She asked if I recently got gas and it could be the gas cap. I told her I got gas 104 miles ago and it should have lit up way before then and the trac off light also turning on should have nothing to do with a gas cap.

What were the codes that triggered the MIL? You can't diagnose anything unless you know what the codes were. Some indicate a possible CPS, many dont.

My wife filled up her charger and went 200 miles before check engine light came on.

I think when guys were having CPS failures the high transmission temperature screen also came on too.

If there was no tell tale signs such as a rough or sputtering engine or loss of power I would have checked to see how tight the gas cap was!

That's probably true. But, it's also not their job to diagnose issues unless it's something pretty obvious. Even if they both agreed that it could be the CPS issue, doesn't the tech have to confirm before any warranty work is approved?

    Yep

In other words, diagnose based on the codes thrown and go from there, dont just throw parts at what you think might be the problem.

They called for me to pick up my truck. I called back and the service writer didn't answer. So still don't know the cause. But it hasn't been a good day for my truck.

Either the tow truck company or the dealer scratched up one of my Method wheels. Both are saying it wasn't their fault so there is a claim in with Toyota roadside assistance and customer care so Toyota and tow truck company can hash out who is at fault.

Found my truck parked on curb at Toyota dealer like this before it went in to be checked and before I left the dealer in a shuttle.

Service writer called me back and her explanation of what the issue was seemed confusing so I'll ask again when I go to pick it up. She said a "speed sensor" in the wheel was the cause. What speed sensors are in wheels and why does it cause a check engine light to go off? I have TPMS in my wheels but that is to report and monitor tire pressure.

The speed sensor is for ABS and traction control. In the old days of ODBII the check engine light was mostly only for emissions related failures. Hence many people’s association of it as the oxygen sensor or gas cap light. But now pretty much any module can request the light.

I recommend a cheap code reader like the AL319 or something better if you can afford it. Then you can at least see what it is. Especially after your free tows run out.

Speed sensors are part of the ABS. They are not part of TPMS. Plenty of discussion on various TW forums involving the sensors.

Thanks @tallpilot, I've also noticed that in this truck everything seems to set off the check engine light even if it's not actually an engine-related issue. Surprised it didn't set off an ABS light too then.
