Just installed a snorkel on my 2022 Tacoma and am getting the check engine light with the code P0113 and P0102. Curious if anyone else has gotten this and if there’s anything I need/can do to fix, or if I need a professional to handle?

Google both codes, learn what they represent, then go back over your work and see if you can correct the problem(s) that have been introduced.

There are dozens of links and videos out there for these codes.

My guess is something is disconnected or not reconnected properly

    minor tweaks
    • P0113 Intake Air Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit High
    • P0102 is triggered when there is low airflow registered by the Mass Air Flow, or MAF, sensor.
Despite the cool look, the engine isn't very happy with the snorkel. I'd unplug the snorkel's connector between the airbox and fender wall as a test, reset the codes, then see if they come back.

I would highly, highly, highly, and STRONGLY recommend you remove the snorkel and throw it straight in the trash heap.

Not only does it look stupid IMHO, it is also clearly causing your issue(s), and it provides ZERO actual protection in the unconceivable scenario where you *imagine* you can drive your Taco under six feet of water.

It is nothing but a big restriction in terms of airflow and causing your engine to be starved of air. Get rid of it.

Aside from 1 particular brand, I've never seen any data to support this. Not saying I wouldn't be easily convinced, but any links to support this?

They are to get above heavy dust levels, not run in swamp buggy races.

And do you want him to replace the fender, or just slap some duct tape over the hole?

Seriously?!?! The OEM air filter is more than enough to deal with "heavy dust levels".

In terms of "proof" of low (restricted) air flow, I offer you this. THE P0102 DTC he is throwing. Seriously. Come on.

Don't know, don't care how to deal with whatever part(s) he hacked apart to install the snorkel. Color matched duct tape would look better IMHO than a snorkel.

Snorkels are mostly designed for dust, not water..contrary to a lot of popular belief

The Baja 1000 race is what I would consider to be run under "heavy dust" conditions.

And you know what? You don't see the TRD spec truck running a snorkel. No, sir. You see it with a .... wait for it.... drum roll.... a RAM AIR hood.

As someone who was genuinely curious, and thinks there's definitely a potential for some truth to your claims, I'm just asking for data. If a CEL is your only source, and being offended is your only response, I'll reserve my questions for other people. I think we all know a million things can cause CEL's. OP could literally unplug/replug a sensor and solve his issues for all we know.

Baja 1000 trucks are extremely high-performance rigs purpose-built for 1 race.

There's a reason the vehicles that spend their entire lives in the desert with minimal maintenance all run snorkels

Well Andy I'm not sure if you're having a bad day or just enjoy internet chest thumping.

While I'm not a fan of the snorkel looks either, the OP was asking for some help with codes. If he likes the look, it's ok with me.

You have a TRD, right? Since nothing on your truck actually came from the TRD program, I hope you've ripped off those poseur stickers.

In the meantime, some folks who were in my 'safe place' have been banned, so that's freed up some space for you. Welcome!

Here's the factory sponsored Tundra that won the 2015 Baja 1000 in the pro stock class category.

These trucks are EATING dust the entire race and the OEM air filter is perfectly fine. As you and I both know, dust particles ingested into the engine would DESTROY it in far less than 1000 miles.

Again, that's what the air filter is for. You live in the desert? Check you filter and change it more frequently as needed. Simple. Effective. Proven.

I can all but guarantee the OP is not driving the Baja 1000. If he was, he darn sure wouldn't have a snorkel.

By the way, where does all the dust go that enters the snorkel? I ask you.

Hint: The answer is STRAIGHT TO THE AIR FILTER

Skid plates, hill crawl assist, CRAWL control, Fox internal bypass shocks, multi-train select, tuning improvements, improved coil and leaf springs designs, significant overall weight reductions (especially in wheels) and body strengthening enhancements have all moved from TRD onto production vehicles.

    One thing that has not???

Check to make sure the sensor on the intake tube did not come loose or come off. Never seen a code after a snorkel install. Did you change the filter, is the filter box still stock, what snorkel did you install? Maybe a couple pics of the engine, air box and associated tubing would really help.

As for the necessity of the snorkel, its all relative. Wait Until you see a brand new 4runner with 9,000 miles on it destroy an engine going through a small mud puddle maybe 1/2 tire deep. It's a sinking feeling, washing your hands in the air box. Things happen, a snorkel is cheap insurance, even more so with our trucks as the air intake is in the wheel well. Once you get large enough tires, the inner fender needs to be cut or removed. So the intake hole is exposed to all the elements.

If your examples to make your argument weren't entirely stupid, people might listen to you. As I said from the start, I think there's a real potential snorkels could restrict airflow, and I've seen dyno charts for one brands snorkel to prove it. But I've never seen or heard of it from any other brand; hence why I asked you for some more info about it. And you could probably convince me its true of more than that one brand if you weren't so emotionally hurt by the look of snorkels and using stupid examples to argue your case. How many Baja events have you actually been to, registered for, or raced in? Do you know anything about the events? Do you really think all of us find snorkels the best solution for race-built trophy trucks? Do you really think a 2015 Tundra in a STOCK class could even have a snorkel, given the rules and regulations for the class limit the truck to STOCK components? What factory 2015 Tundra had a snorkel? Its just a stupid example to try and make your point. Not to mention, countless other trucks (even in the stock class) have had snorkels in the baja races. 2023 Ranger Raptor in the 2022 stock class for example. And straight from the website, here's some 2024 goodies for ya:
