So I figured I need a locking gas cap so I bought one to replace the OEM cap.

All went well until this morning when I started the truck up...I got the dreaded check engine light. No big deal, I just put the OEM cap back on and expected the check engine light to go away. It seems that it will not go away.

My main question is: once the check engine light comes on, and you fix the problem, does it stay on? If so what is the best way to reset it?

Takes a few miles before it goes off unless you have a code reader that resets the light.

Same thing happened to me. You have to use a regular cas cap. Something about the locking one set my check engine light off. Pretty sure our gas is safe. There’s a little dilhickey in there that prevents people from stealing your gas.

You can reset the check engine light if it doesn’t go off. YouTube it!

I was just making sure this check engine light thing was normal. It makes me a little nervous that it doesn't go away quickly.

I'm not worried about someone stealing gas as much as someone pouring something in the tank to screw things up. My neighborhood has become more sketchy over the past couple of years and I am usually the one calling the cops on suspicious activity. Long story short things have got really tense on the block.

I'd rather be safe than sorry on this issue. Or at least safer. If nothing else it would slow the idiots down long enough for me to take action LOL.

The locking cap probably didn't seal properly,
Try disconnecting the battery for half an hour to try to reset it

Just disconnect the battery for a few minutes, CEL will reset. Otherwise it could take a hundred or so miles.

Aftermarket gas caps and Tacomas have never gotten along, ever

The new gas cap set off mine as well. I disconnected the battery to clear the cel. But if it is a issue in your neighborhood then install the locking one when you get home and reinstall the oem one when getting ready to leave. I know it a pita, but it will work:thumbsup:

No. I did notice that it is the favoured brand. All of the Autozones and Advanced Auto's around me don't carry them for whatever reason. I might just order off Amazon.

I hope not. It was fine before I made the cap switch. I might go to Autozone and borrow their reader.

BTW I've always put aftermarket gas caps on all my past vehicles and never ever had issues.

A code reader is pretty cheap on Amazon as well. Easy to read the code and clear the CEL.

Do you need to spin it until it clicks at least once like the OEM? I’m assuming you did...my wife didn’t spin it until it clicked at least once and the light came up too. After we clicked it, dealer reset it but it would’ve reset itself anyways.

my Stant #10504 locking gas cap came from WalMart and caused my CEL to come on too, took "resetting" the cap twice for the light to go out, hasn't come on again in a year, works good (hopefully) lasts along time!

IMO, The best answer will be the OBD Scanner.. and from there you can reset the code for that Gas cap issues you might have.

.. Or you can go Autozone for a free OBD scan check.. ;)

I got the stant #10504 locking cap and works great. Ordered it from rockauto.com. I had a stant on my Gen2 Tacoma as well with no issues.
