I just got an 01 Tacoma and I’m looking to put some sweet (but cheap) overland mods on it. Any recommendations?

    Uhm...

Just take the stuff you use for camping with you.

There is no check list for that with the exception of safety and recovery equipment.

Even then, that'd be limited to how far out you go, and how often.

I have a full size d ring shovel in my access cab that I've used a few times at random times. Nothing fancy, got it at Lowes but it's solid as hell.

I love these kinds of posts. They're my favorite by far lol.

So.... here's my recommendations, over landing is just camping that people have made a big deal out of. Like kwikvette said, some recovery gear and your camping gear is all you really need. If you want to do what all the "cool kids" are doing, then it's not gonna be cheap. If cheap is your thing and you got or can gain some skills, then doing things yourself will save you some money. That's the only way to do anything Toyota related on the cheap anymore. I built my 1st toyota with nothing more than a 180 pc Stanley hand tool set. Look for used stuff is another good way to save money. This is a great site for all kinds of info, just don't get too caught up in the overland cool aid. Other than that welcome!

It depends on where you want to go with your truck and exactly what you’re doing.

I have no idea what you’re experience is or what your goals are.

But, I’d just get out and go camping and mod your truck and get gear as you find you need it.

Like for me I do long trips to Baja every now and then. I had a few trips where it was my truck plus motorcycles. Which is great because we all take turns riding and driving.

Anyway, fuel can be big concern in Baja. The bikes (2) were KTM 640 adventures with their 7 gallon fuel tanks have a range of about 250 miles before needing to refuel. My truck is like 150 miles off road range.
We decided a comfortable range in Baja is 300 miles.
The truck needs 15 more gallons and the bikes need 1.5 more gallons each. So we need about 18 gallons more fuel Than we can carry.
Rather than carry 4 Jerry cans with take a huge amount of space and are a pain in the ass to handle we put a second gas tank from a 1990 F150 where the spare tire used to be. It’s 19 gallons.
Now I can carry 37 total gallons of fuel and never have to deal with Jerry cans.

This is just of an example of one solution to a common challenge.

As others have said, you didnt give us nearly enough information to figure out what you're doing.

Only thing Ill say is that good traction boards (aka MaxTrax) are worth the money. Lots of other stuff is brand-name hype and you can get a better deal elsewhere. Or keeping an eye out for used stuff too

OK, first, have you done any off-roading before? Have you done any camping before?

If you have, take all the stuff you typically take on either type of trip, stuff it in your truck, and go.

"Overlanding" is the Bro version of camping with your 4x4. Don't look to instagram or the 3rd gen section for mods that are "necessary" for going camping with your 4x4. It's all personal preference, and your budget. The more you go on your OWN trips, the more you'll figure out what "mods" will suit your preferences and budget.

Aside from some basic safety gear and first aid, don't worry about extra gas cans, trasharoos, and hi-lifts, and all that other crap you see dangling on overlander rigs. If you need any of that stuff on your first overlanding trip, you got in WAY over your head, lol...

Before I got my truck all my camping was backpacking.
I used that gear forever and still do but only for backpacking.
Until I built my camper I would throw a tarp on the ground, sleeping pad on top and sleep out in the open.
    You don’t need much.

No that's easily funded; I'm going camper shell since I hate stacking everything in my access cab for daily errands etc.

Like those flippak things, or a normal camper shell?

I've always liked the flippaks, but damn they're pricey.
