charcoal cannister - purpose & life expectancy

2019 V6 - 520 miles. finally got the dealer to get my real registration & plates. 5 miles after I left, the check engine light comes on. went back to the dealer and now says the charcoal cannister was faulted.

what do these gadgets do?

is this to be changed as normal PM service?

They absorb the fuel fumes from your gas tank. Theoretically it should last the life of the vehicle .

 

It is emissions. Something about fuel pressure venting if I remember right. I...er, a friend...had issues on a previous truck and removed it from the system. Not sure if it will throw a code in these trucks if deleted. I think the EPA might mad. Have had issues on 2 trucks ever. The second one was a warranty and it never came back.

 

The canister is actually just a box. It's the electronically actuated valves attached to it that sometimes go bad and set a check engine light. Once replaced, you should be good to go for a loooong time. They don't often fail since they're so simple in design.

Not sure about the Tacoma, but on many vehicles overfilling the gas tank will cause the fuel to flood into the canister and ruin it. Don't top off modern vehicles.

 

Especially on a hot day

 

appreciate the "heads-up" especially 'cause i'm a 'round-up to the next nickel' guy.

the dealer replaced the "pressure switch (part of EVAP pump)" cleared code P045015 and the truck runs more better than new. I also seem to be getting better gas mileage read out, so it's probably all somehow connected.

 

Apparently my charcoal canister crapped out on me. $1000 to have it replaced. dammit.

 

isn’t that covered under the 100k emissions warranty?

 

I got close to 200k km out of mine. Replaced it myself. $400 CND in parts.

Good information in your owners Warranty & Maintenance Guide for coverage of emissions components. Yes, 8 years/80K miles for Cat, ECM, OBD light and port. Charcoal canister only 2 years/24 K miles (perhaps more if you purchased an extended warranty). Best advice from others, do not keep squeezing the nozzle to top off the tank.
