In theory, if I remove this thing, and plug up the hoses the truck will still run perfectly?

yes, I know the fuel tank needs to vent. So I would have to allow that somehow. (maybe run it to the intake?)

but what about the check engine light. could we just cross the wires to the sensor?

This is just one more complication we don't really need to haggle with if we don't have to.

yes, it looks like it has one sensor

crossing the wires will trick it?

because there is no reason for it.

yes I know why its there, but if it is not doing its job and giving problems,

then there is no reason for it.

good idea, but that does not fix the leak in the various hoses

plugging them up at the source will permanently fix the leak.

I said the same thing about all those stupid parts they make you buy with a new truck. I started removing everything that had no reason to be there and ended up with a much better vehicle.

This doesn't make any sense, if the hoses are leaking, 1, plugging them won't help the leaks as they will still be there, 2, if they are leaking where they attach to a plastic nipple, then maybe a small hose clamp will do the deed...you are going to have ongoing problems if you remove the canister and sensor...

whatever, your truck and you have to deal with it...good luck...

I know filling it with gas right to the top on the tube screws up the canister. Maybe he's been doing that? :notsure:

not the same at all. the airbag sits there and saves your ass one time...

this canister has a job and that is to vent the tank and make sure the fuel vapors don't go in to the open environment.

when it is easily ruined by going on an incline with a full tank of gas, THEN IT IS NOT DOING ITS JOB BECAUSE IT ID RUINED BY THE LIQUID FUEL. this is a design flaw on an off road truck.

this unit should be located higher above the fuel tank (not exactly possible) or have some other way of keeping liquid fuel from ruining it.

all it is doing in my truck is setting off the CEL. im not paying 400-500 bucks to replace this thing again. I could have another real problem and would not know because the CEL is always on from this damn canister.

no, if you have a full tank (where the pump stops it), and it splashes around (like on an incline) the gas will get in there.

I don't try and pump in more gas

    BAMMM !!!

On a more serious note, I wonder if you could splice something in that would block the fuel but allow air to get through? Like maybe a fuel filter in an upright position? The fuel is not likely to get through after it hits the filter because it isn't under constant pressure and the fuel filter has a larger crossection. The fuel would roll back down. Air flow ultimately restored. Only a theory. Just seems like there should be a way.

OK, off topic. But I do agree with you.

I am not from here, I was stationed down here in 2009 and kind of stuck here for work now (not the best economy to try and sell a house/find an new job in another state) also my x wife has a good job here and I cant leave my kid.

But yes, outside of the tourist area NOLA is a trashy city full of trash and corrupt politicians that like to keep the trash trashy.

    anyway, Thanks Tugboat and Robert

No problem buddy. Just an unproven idea I pulled out of my hat. Probably not worth a thanks. Never tried it nor seen it done.

Hope you'll keep posting. Seems like you have a legit problem that is shared by many. Would be interesting if you ever are able to find an elegant solution.
