Hi all, long time lurker here. As you can tell by the long thread title, as soon as I thought I was finished with everything I went to start my engine and check for any leaks underneath and lo and behold, there it was. I noticed that when I was tightening the oil filter housing back on I may have overdone it a little as the big rubber gasket expanded to the outside of the housing a little. Also, I tried to use my extension to take off the little thing to let the housing drain and instead the whole housing loosened up without even needing to use the motivx tool. Any tips guys? Thanks.

Remove the entire cartridge and replace the o-ring if it got pinched. Otherwise if it isn't damaged just re install it correctly.

same thing happened to me my first time changing it. it was very snug tightening it back up and i had a feeling the gasket was moving. sure enough it leaked. 2nd time i lubed the o ring and it went on smoother. just my observation and it seated properly.

You can drain the new oil into a clean container and re-do the housing and drain cap install then pour oil back in.
The o ring goes in the groove at the top of the threads. Not higher up on the housing.
Also putting some oil on the o ring helps to prevent it from sliding out of the groove or pinching.
Thread on housing but do not tighten.
Tighten drain plug to 10 ft pounds (approx hand tight)
Then tighten housing to 18 ft pounds ( approx "snug tight") with wrench.

i had this issue too. maybe i torque the actual housing too tight. i ended up just loosening the whole thing using the 3/8 rachet attachment. i didn't take it off all the way, just enough to drain what was in the cartridge.

Third gen oil change procedure here: Toyota Tacoma 3.5L Gen3 Oil Service Guides - Motivx Tools. This has all the torque specs so you know about how tight it should be.

If somehow you cracked the plastic cartridge (very easy to do), it will be a nice time to upgrade to the metal one (pn 15620-31060 is pnp).

If you’re seeing the gasket, I think you put it all the way down on the lip? If it was in the groove, even if you tighten it to the max, you wouldn’t see the gasket.

Dude, I think you're right. I did put it all the way down in the lip and I noticed it and thought something was wrong but didn't put 2 and 2 together.

I forgot to mention that my drain plug was so loose when I went to drain the old oil that I didn't even a ratchet for it and I could take it off with two fingers. Once I got it off I saw there was no crush washer on there so I must've forgot that last time haha.

Yikes! Could have been a disaster. I admit to having a few of these 'learning moments' as well.

Check to see if its stuck to the oilpan next time. You might need lightly press the side of it with a screwdriver if it is stuck firmly.

Also, lubing the o-ring before reinstalling the housing will help prevent binding.

So I fixed my mistake and there is no more leaking. Two things I noticed is that upon pressing the start button twice to prime the fuel pump for a few seconds I didn't hear the usual sound of it priming and the 2nd thing is after checking the new oil level on my dipstick I noticed the dipstick smelled kind of burnt. Anyone know what could possibly be going on here or is it a non issue?

Never heard of "pressing the start button twice to prime the fuel pump for a few seconds"
Most just push the start button until it starts
can't comment on "I noticed the dipstick smelled kind of burnt."
because we can't smell what you do
maybe just try to drive and enjoy it rather than being so worried
If something goes wrong that's what warrantee is for

Might have over tightened it, I usually do wrist right. Did you make sure to remove the old seals as well as apply some oil to the outside of the seal so it wouldn't drag when tightening?

Edit, NVM see you found the cause.
