I dipped my OR wheels and centercaps. I then painted my center caps to match the truck with 3 coats of clear over the plasti dip. Yesterday I went to peel the painted plasti dip off the center caps and it would not come off easily so I began scraping it and pretty much destroyed my centercaps.

So 3 things to take from this peeps:

    1) painting over plasti dip can be done and looks pretty good, but will NOT come off the same as plasti dip or easily for that matter.

    2) Does anyone have the centercaps from their OR rims that they wanna sell?

    3) would it look like shit to run my OR wheels plasti dipped WITHOUT centercaps?

Lesson learned: shoulda left well enough alone

I bet the chemicals from the clear coat ate through the plasti-dip.

Why not plastidip them again without the clear coat?

I would have just resprayed them but there were a couple of small blemishes from the wheel shop taking the wheels off to balance. Advice to those that have or are thinking about plasti dipping:
1.Take your truck and have the stick on weights put on the inside of the wheel instead of the hammer on weights on the outside. then plasti dip away.
    2. before taking your truck to have it worked on take off your center caps. YOU will handle the center caps a lot better than Joe Blow tire balancer.

All in all I will plasti dip my wheels again. They held up great for a month. The only reason they started peeling was because the wheel weight was taken off the outside. Even then they didn't peel that bad. If I could go back in time I would have just sprayed and touched it up, BUT the one bad thing about plasti dip is that it is difficult to get uniform texture when touching up. May just be me but I'm no pro painter.
Ya'll have to admit. The two tone wheels looked legit as hell. I ordered new smooth centercaps and plan on going all black when they arrive.

make sure to wait the 20-30 min bwtween coats like the can says. its worth the wait

Maybe a thicker first coat would have helped. I didn't use a thick dirt coat on some deep dish rims from my previous car and it was a pita if not impossile to take off. After some brainstorming I used a razor blade cut some small slits into platidip carefully then used my powerwasher to blast away the plastidip. (Beareful not yo get to close to wheel and take your time). I got to close (touching ) and it sprayed th chrome off.

Some clear coats have sealants on them and it could have been that or maybe the chemicals in it messed it up. I plasitdipped my chrome grill, O/R wheels, and chrome bumper about a month ago and its held up in the rain, car wash by hand, and automatic car washes. Still looks good! Some people have had theres done for over a year now with no problems
