    Hi!

I have a 3rd gen Tacoma 4x4 sport and as you know when going to4x4 (high or low) center diff locks .. I was wondering is it possible to subject this lock to switch ? I need this because sometimes i want to carry heavy stuff on a windy road going uphill so you want to be on 4x4 ( preferably low) but with open diffs to avoid redundant stress on the drivetrain.

    Cheers !

No. There is no center differential. Just a transfer case that connects the output to both drive shafts. It's all or nothing.

Your diffs remain open regardless on drive mode for your sport. You want to swap to 4lo on the fly?

There's a reason for needing to be in neutral before switching to low gearing.

    Buy a 4runner that's full time 4wd.

    You have part time

If you're just after lo range maybe consider the 2lo mod.

As @Joe23 mentioned you could attempt the 2Lo mod. It's not easy as far as I know though. Could also remove the front driveshaft. Obviously that's inconvenient but maybe it's worth it for your use case.
