Happy to say I now own a 2022 Tacoma, but the center console comes with a safe?

it’s pretty cool but I don’t think I’d be carrying a gun or anything or really anything that small in value that Id want to lock in my truck.

does anyone know if by removing it voids any warranty or anything since it came with the truck?

has anyone had any experience removing one of these?

I don't think there is a factory option for center console gun safe but I could be wrong. Is this a brand new vehicle or did you buy used? My guess is that it's an after market unit.

PS: to try and answer your question, it should be removable if it's one of those drop in safes. But I would leave it as I bet you will ultimately find it to be handy to have.

Truck is new and yes it came with it.

I’m gonna try it for a few weeks by my initial feeling towards it isn’t to positive. It’s kind of annoying to unlock and lock and takes up most of the storage to me.

The options I've seen for a lockable center console safe are all aftermarket drop-in units. I seriously doubt it would have any affect on the warranty other than the center console itself (ie, something goes wrong with the cover or latch, etc).

Sorry, I just re-read your post and realized you already had this. Not enough coffee this morning:facepalm:

You may not use it regularly but IMHO if you carry and are going into a place where you are not allowed to have a weapon (here in FL we aren't allowed to carry inside anywhere that serves alcohol, for example) it's a handy place to secure your weapon. If you don't carry and don't have any valuables to secure you may not have a use for it. Removing it may leave some holes in console box itself because they use bolts to secure it, but other than that it should come out.

So... Why'd you get it? It had to be in the paperwork as an option, right? It can be removed either way. Talk to your dealer.

It's a $359 option on the build your toyota website with the SR. I don't see how removing it would void a warranty.

I bought one to put in. Just two 10mm bolts at the bottom under a removable liner. And no way removing the safe can void any warranty.

To each their own but I use my safe for a lot of things besides storing a firearm. Anyone with a hammer and a big screwdriver can get into it easily, but it will stop a smash and grab.

that’s where I’m torn. I plan on buying some smaller concealed weapons for wife and kids and I thought the safe would be awesome, but I know I wouldn’t be driving every day with something.

I got it because it was the first new truck to pop up in my area with all the specs I wanted. I honestly overlooked the center piece. I didn’t want to wait another month or so to see if any new ones came on the lot and then have to compete with other buyers.

I thought I would warm up to it but kinda of a hassle to mess with when I’m driving.

is it one solid box? I’ve seen some videos and it looks like some legs and a top part and other videos that’s a whole box.

I don't have the locking center console. I don't carry all the time but when I do it's a PITA to find a secure place to store the weapon if I can't take it with me. Just something to consider.

Question - does it lock automatically every time you close it or is it just the second door that's that hassle?

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
It's likely using the same 2 10mm bolts that are securing the rear portion of the center console. Remove the 2 bolts and yank the safe. you will need to put those bolts back in or your center console will come loose. That is also how you remove the entire console. Lift up the back and it splits away from the forward half which also lifts out after you remove the shifter knob.

Its an accessory, so has no effect on your warranty.

I'd pull it and set it on a shelf somewhere. If you still dont want it after 6 months, sell it for a good chunk of cash.

I don't keep much in the lower portion of my console. I've got the shallow insert tray that has all the stuff I use often, with just a few items rattling around underneath. As long as my tray would still fit, I think this would be a good addition. The stuff I keep under could easily go in the safe, (although there's little value there), and there would still be room for a small pistol. I personally wouldn't mind one.

I'll bet if you remove it, it would sell pretty easily.

Mine came with the safe. I wasn't sure I'd like it at first but, since I do carry, it comes in handy from time to time. Also, it's a great place to store emergency cash and credit cards.

A G19 fits in a console safe just fine. My 1911 will without the holster.
