this is making me think of the old mazda rx7. always loved it, could never get it. just not designed for taller people.
But in another thread about this someone brought up a very good point, it depends on how you're built. cause I test drove one and had no problems with head room and I'm 6foot. But my height is from my legs, not torso, and I sit really straight when driving.

Yep...totally torso dependent, and also some are more comfortable with leaning seats back.

I am 6'2, and all torso. My mother is 5'10, and her waist is a inch higher than mine. I have short legs and (apparently) a hugely tall spine / torso. Once I'm in the truck, I fit fine*. But I sometimes bump my head on the upper door sill when getting in. The upper door sill is way too low, or I'm not used to ducking into the truck ass-first. I sure do wish there was a "Jesus Handle' on the driver's side that I could pull on.

No, Really. Even with the 4x4, I still ruin my hair ducking into it every morning. I wish I could get lower-mounted seats.

*= I wish the seat was lower, but not for reasons of headroom once IN the truck. Maybe I need side steps?

So my local dealership finally got a 16 as a demo earlier this week and my wife and I got to test drive it. DCSBTRDSPT. Once in the seat I have gobs of head space. Getting in and out I do have to duck under the roof frame which is probably one of those quirky things I'll just get used to which isn't so bad for me.
Again, I'm 6' even but legs are longer than torso.

I have renamed the upper door frame. It is now the complementary hat remover / hair-messer-upper.

Everyone is just a little taller in the morning, as your spine expands and relaxes as you sleep. It then compresses a little during your upright day to day activities. For me, this means that getting into my 2016 every morning involves sliding the side of my head against the top door sill. Hair = mussed. Hat = removed or horribly askew.

Once I'm in there, no worries about headroom at all.

When I climb in 9 hours later after work, I can duck just under it with no contact. I guess I'm borderline.

Surely there is a trick to this? I've got to figure out some kind of maneuver that a dude my size can use to get into this thing without bumping his head.

I know the sill is so low for safety reasons. The access cab trucks don't have a B-pillar (well, they do, but it's the one in front of the bed... I guess it would be accurate to say they don't have a C-pillar?). So for strength during collision the whole body frame has to be a bit bigger / stronger around the edges. This is why the doorway is nearly 4 inches lower than the interior top.

I also worry about what the driver's seat is going to look like in 5 years. You have to plant your ass, duck your head, lean in, and then rotate. That's going to be a LOT more wear on the outside cushion.

Everyone is different I suppose. I'm 5'11.75" and I've never thought of the Tacoma seating as an issue in any way; my 2016 is perfectly comfortable to me. Someone mentioned the Mazda RX7. I owned a 1987 RX7 Turbo for several years and loved it. I don't recall it being uncomfortable at all.

Clearly some people are much more adaptable and less sensitive to seating position than others.

I am just over 5'8" and sat in a limited (sunroof std) yesterday. I do sit fairly upright when I drive. First thing I noticed was the lack of extra headroom. I even commented to the salesman about it. I have tons more headroom in my WRX and my wife's Legacy. I also sat in the 4Runner and noticed how much more headroom (legroom too) it had versus the Tacoma. I could do the moonroof, but damn, I felt my head pretty close to the headliner.

I test drove a trd sport with the moon roof and tend to recline the seat instead of sitting up right. I'm 6'3" with 34" pants length and noticed right away that my hair would brush up against the roof. Decided the moon roof was not for me.

Finally sat in a 2016 Tacoma with the sunroof. I am 6" with a 31" inseam, and the ceiling was about 1.5" too low sitting at my normal position -- have to hold my head at an angle and the top of my temple "hits" the edge of the sun roof hole and top of head brushes the opaque slider when closed.

Overall about 2" less headroom than my current vehicle, a 2005 RAV4 with the seat height set at its lowest.

Reclining the seat slightly but still to an awkward feeling angle (to me) my hair still hit the ceiling. Models without the sunroof are fine. Guess that's what I would need to get.

I'm 6'5" and have absolutely 0 problems in mine.

Are you guys intentionally sitting up at a 90 degree angle looking to hit your head so you can post on the forum? I seriously don't understand how someone 4 inches shorter than me has a height issue that I'm not even close to having.

I'm 6'2 and have zero headroom issues once I'm in the seat. People here are complaining about the upper door sill. It's hard to get into this truck if you're tall via torso / spine. Once you're in, there is a lot of room and you're comfy. Actually GETTING into the truck means ducking underneath the frame, and that sucks. A Lot.

It's all about proportions. Some people are all legs, some people are all torso. I love the amount of headroom I have once I'm sitting in the truck, but I absolutely hate the fact that I can just barely duck under the upper door sill when I climb in.

I'm not talking about the door transition, I'm talking about headroom once completely seated in the truck. I am sitting at the normal upright driving position that is natural to me and which I have always assumed in every vehicle I have owned and driven. The seat back is not at its maximum vertical position, but a few clicks back.

In the 2016 Tacoma with sunroof, the headroom available to me is less than: 1978 Chevy C10, 1983 Ford E150 (with sunroof), 1989 Toyota Pickup, 1991 Toyota Tercel, 1999 Toyota Corolla, 1999 Camry Solara (with sunroof), 2007 Nissan Altima (with sunroof), 2005 Toyota RAV4 (with sunroof.)

Not hard for me to get in/out....and I'm not sure who buys a truck for ease of in/out lol.

To each their own I guess.

Lots more headroom without the sunroof. I figured if they are similar to the ones on the Tundra, they won't work long anyway

This is an ironic thread. This happens to be my biggest problem, and the MAIN reason I am driving a Tundra. I am 6'2" and I love the seat position in the Tundra. I got out of a 2012 Tacoma into my Tundra simply because I felt like I fit better in the Tundra. I love the room. But, I miss the maneuverability/easy to drive of the Tacoma. I have a 2016 Tacoma on order, and sat in one recently it felt tight, but thats because I drove my Tundra to the dealer, and I am use to the room in the Tundra. I didn't have any issues with hitting my head, and I like to drive "up on the wheel". I do agree with another post about almost hitting your head getting in the truck. Solution: Lift, haha. My biggest complaint is my left leg/knee. Because I sit closer to the wheel my knees are bent, and the only place for my left leg to go, is on the door. So much so that I've polished the plastic on previous Tacomas. The same applies in the 2016. But, I guess I am stuck in between until they come up with a Tacundra, so Ill just have to manage. The Tundra with a 2.5" Lift up front is a big truck, even at 6'2" I still need to hop into it (when the running boards are off). When I took the running boards off, watching my 5'2" girlfriend get in is comical. Haha. Also, her feet do not touch the floor in the Tundra! Crazy to think about how different the seat positions are between the Tundra and Tacoma. Anyways, I decided to suck it up and go with the Taco. I am very sad to let my Tundra go, but at the moment I do not need a V8 since I sold my trailer queen (2006 S3-R E46 M3 :))))), and a Tacoma just makes a whole lot more sense right now. 10mpg/fill up once a week is really getting old.
