I came along an ad on craigslist and this guy is producing and selling custom catalytic converter cages (patent pending as mentioned by seller). Catalytic converter theft has become a big issue in my area and I sure don't want to be the next victim. It looks like it'll work. I'm thinking about calling this guy. What do you guys think???

What's to prevent the thief from sawzalling the exhaust immediately fore and aft of the cage?

When my cat was stolen the thief didn't waste time with sockets and wrenches, and went directly for the tried and true reciprocating saw. I can practically guarantee this will hold true for 99% of all catalytic converter thefts.

I agree with both of these guys- if someone's after your cat, they will most likely sawzall it off instead of spending the time to actually take it off with tools and risk getting caught. Most people that steal cats take them in as scrap metal- they're worth a pretty penny. Don't waste your money on the cage- it won't deter anyone who is serious about stealing your cat. If anything, spot-welding the catalytic converter to the rest of the exhaust system has proven to be more effective.
It's funny, because my sister's fiance just had his stolen out from under his truck, and he had a cage.

    Devils advocate...

Can't one simply cut the rebar also? I see it taking longer thus the thief moving on to easier targets, but still if they are set on getting it they will.

Looks nice and menacing though... :)

Edit: After looking again it would be a pain to get through all that...

    Holy necro thread...

Simple solution now in 2023: If you don't offroad just buy a Cat Security / MillerCAT shield. If you do offroad, buy an RCI skid with the cat shields.

Both are affordable deterrents but importantly they are also removable for service. Thieves aren't going to take the time to remove them.

I can't find these for a 2004 Tacoma. You may remember there are 2 cats separated by 3 feet of pipe.

Ahh shoot didn't see you have a collector vehicle

Looks like you have less options: CAT-RAP, Cat Clamp, homemade/DIY, or maybe this new one being made by a TW member.

Yeah, I tried to be a part of the discussion. However, an error message comes up stating, "You must have at least 50 posts of substance to reply to this thread."

Yeah that's in the Buy/Sell/Trade area which has a 50 post minimum to keep spammers away. You're pretty close, just make a few more replies (don't spam though) and you'll be good.

Works as a deterrent. Thieves will see that there’s a cage and might pass on your car cause it’s gonna take more time to cut through it. So they might just go look for another car instead.

So when I gave my sister my old prius when I got the taco, we had put a shield on it. Just got news like 10 minutes ago they still stole her cat.
