Hey guys, looking for suggestions for my situation. I found out today that the honeycomb inside my drivers side rear Catalytic converter is rattling. Drilled a hole in it to verify and atempted to stop the rattle with a screw. White power fell out when i made the hole. The screw method worked for about 10 min.

I refuse to pay $850 for a stock replacement one. No emossions testing for me this december because i will be moving so thats not a huge concern.

What are your suggestions? I was thinking URD Y pipe. Its the perfect time in my book. The only thing im not looking forward to is no cats at all since i have the spec-u headers, and i dont want a horrible exhaust note.

    All opinions are welcome.

Factory cats are the only option on Tacomas. Toyota emissions software is so precise that aftermarket cats don't cut it and the CEL light will just come on.

If you're deleting the cat, make sure to use the URD O2 sensor simulators. Otherwise your CEL is always going to stay on.

On a side note, is this on your 2013? Cats shouldn't fail in 3 years. I have 2 99s with cats that still work

I do have the simulators as i have the spec u haders. The rear cats on the other hand don't effet the sensors.

Yeah i am surprised it failed so soon. I have 68k miles.

My concern with that is if one side will flow better than the other. Not sure if thats actually a problem or not.

This may be whats happening. I dont really want to spend the money on the y pipe right now either tho, im starting construction in 2months. I want every penny.

it will need converters to run right. you could do damage to the engine running with out them.
besides it is illegal for a shop to remove them or fix a exhaust that has them removed.

    that's the official response.
aftermarket converters do restrict flow, more than factory units. they usually will not last as long as factory either.

    hope this helps.

I'm not sure how the 2nd gens are set up, but if the O2 sensors are downstream of the cat it will. If they are upstream of the car you're correct

On the 2nd gens the o2 sensors are upstream of the cats. My main concern is really 2 things. Noise, and the potential for it bothering my engine. Electronicaly/sensor wise my truck wont notice the difference if they are there or not. But im not familiar with the system enough to tell whether it will negativly effect the engine in a mechanical sense.

Warranty covers the Cat out to 80K Miles. Toyota owes you a new one. They could however deny since you drilled a hole in it.

That could be a deal breaker. I wouldn't blame them a bit if they denied you.

Theres a known issue on these bad CATS so Toyota is replacing them for free under their Service Campaign
might want to check this link OP
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...vice-campaign-2010-2014-4-cyl-tacomas.399785/

Ive had mine replaced before they sent out the letter. Then after they sent the notice, dealer replaced it again with the newer version.
    Did i say FREE !!!

But like the other member mentioned earlier, not sure what the dealer will say when they see that you drilled your CAT. Could be a $1500 mistake

More like $500 mistake because I wont replace it with stock. Ill just do the URD Y pipe. Talked to the dealer about it and they have to "get back to me" on it.

i ran a car with a performance exhaust without a cat for awhile, it does change your exhaust note and I had a terrible drone. As Rock mention put in a resonator- in my case used a real short glass pack,. Sweeten things up for me. Eventually I got around to putting the cat on and removed the glass pack. Even a little bit quieter but pretty close.

I bought a Dorman from Rock auto for $250 a few years back, works great.
Came with gaskets and most hardware.
I got $40 for the old stock cat from a local scrap dealer, our cats fall under a category called "low grade foreign" Thanks toyota!!

Dog friendly, with dog snot on inside windows, with of course a/c! Mag 16 inch wheels from a Mazda.
Here in Florida I have a 05 4 cylinder. Just had a shop replaced it on 2/19, with a universal one installed for $240. I assume they go by exhaust pipe size to determine which size the catalytic converter is needed. Anyway I've haven't had any problems since it was installed. Good luck on getting a free one!
