Anyone gotten a truck from carmax a purchased max care warranty? Any reviews?

    Thanks

I’m thinking about purchasing a Tacoma from them just don’t know whether to fork out the extra money for max care...

    How are carmax mechanics?

Ya I read that the warranty itself is decent but the mechanics aren’t the best but I’m sure that varies between location.

Price is 31,000 with 35,000 miles

    Year is a 2016

    Sport manual with sunroof

I’m gonna go see about a new truck today

I bought a 2010 Mazda Hatchback from them in 2012 used. Thing was amazing, never had any issues at all with it and I got a decent price for a used car

Bought my 2005 Acura TL 6spd from them back in 2009. Ran like a champ until its final day (2018).

I got my tacoma from them, and purchased their warranty. Paid for itself in the first 8 months.

I was getting a driveline vibe at ~40 mph with a clunk at start and stop. They replaced the carrier bearing along with giving me a whole new OEM driveshaft. Fixed the problem. There was never any argument or difficulty with it either.

I bought my truck from carmax and got the extended warranty. I did it mainly for peace of mind in case the truck had a major problem that i missed while looking it over and test driving it. I havent had any issues yet, put about 46k miles on the truck since i bought it

I doubt Carmax does anything but resell someone else's warranty. And most aftermarket warranties are pretty restrictive.

For example, does the warranty work all have to be done at CarMax?

Does all the routine service work like oil changes, brakes etc. have to be done at CarMax to keep the warranty valid?

Who decides if a particular item is unwarrantable or not?

All I can suggest is to use an over-abundance of caution. With any non OE warranty, not just CarMax.

To me, warranties are mostly overrated and just a way for stealerships to make more money. The price you pay for the extended warranty is just about the same as a major repair. Why spend the money now for potentially no reason?

This is definitely true for new cars. But if you're buying used, it could be worth it. it rolls the cost of the potential major repair into the monthly payment, and if nothing goes wrong, then its a bit of peace of mind during the warranty period, when the car's issues, that didn't show up during a test drive, may become apparent.

31k for a used 2016? IMHO it is too high... which trim? I paid 29k for a new sr back in 2016 and 35.9k for a 6mt OR.. you could get a new one for 2k more

I guess it really depends on the year, mileage, and condition of the car. When I bought my 07, it had 98k miles and I opted out of the extended warranty. I did heavy research on the 2nd gen Tacoma’s before I purchased the truck though. I suppose everyone is different and some enjoy that added peace of mind.

Truth. i got mine because I wanted the little bit of extra peace of mind, even though i saw that the truck was in great condition, and it ended up working out for me, because it saved me a large, $1400 bill, even though I am spending more on it in the long run.

If you need to buy used, I would be looking at something with a remaining factory warranty. Aftermarket warranties are too ambiguous and not reliable. I am not saying that Toyota is going to fix all your potential woes but you have a better chance IMO.

Carmax itself is fine. Their prices are higher than you would pay versus haggling some place else. But... if you don't like to haggle or play games they're a good option.

I had an employee who had a bad experience with their warranty program. The car she purchased started leaking oil and needed a gasket and a few other things replaced after about 60 days of ownership. Parts were cheap, but labor was expensive. Upon review, Carmax told her that they found JB Weld around the gasket seal and they accused her of trying to fix it on her own, worsening the problem. They refused to work on her car or fix it under their warranty.

She didn't even know what JB Weld was. Our best guess is that the previous owner applied it and Carmax didn't find it when they accepted it as a trade-in.

On our 2015 Rav4 I got the extended warranty. The warranty policy cost me 680 dollars after some negotiating. Just a few weeks ago the radio went out and had to get replaced. Warranty covered it to the tune of 1045 dollars. Im not the best at math, but I think I did good.

Carmax sold me a lemon once...2003 s2000...had an intermittent #4 cylinder misfire that would randomly surprise me at the worst possible times. Carmax's mechanics attempt was to dump seafoam in the gas tank. Honda didn't have any kind of solution. Traded it in and got lucky when the dealership didn't have it happen to them on the test drive. With a little luck, the car got stolen and some dickhead thieves are now handling it.

But their dealership's cost on the radio unit was probably $400, so Toyota is still $280 ahead at this point. (And so are you, if you would actually pay $1045 for a factory headunit.)
