Best Above-Bed Storage Solution?

  1. Bed Crossbars Only - why need more?

  2. Crossbars + Cargo Basket - it's unique and flexible!

  3. Bed rack - just commit!

I have a soft vinyl trifold [Gator] tonneau cover on my '18 DCSB Pro right now and I'm looking into adding bed crossbars that are tonneau-compatible (maybe kbvoodoo) and a cargo basket.

I don't prefer the look of a roof rack, especially the OEM one, so I'm trying to figure out other storage solutions that don't involve any drilling (it's a lease - for now).

Has anyone here added bed crossbars + a cargo basket? I'm trying to see how it looks and if it's provided ample enough storage for camping gear. I think this could add a unique look and provides more flexibility than a bed rack. Opinions?

This is what I've been looking at doing:

    upload_2018-6-1_9-7-31.jpg

I really don't want to sacrifice rear visibility, so by putting a rack on top of tall bars I can mount kayaks/sup boards easier and have extra storage.

Problem is, I have a tool box right now and although I could make it fit/work, it might look a little ridiculous.

Visibility is a great point. I'm trying to keep it below the roofline to maybe save on resistance/MPGs/likelihood of items within shifting, but maybe seeing is more important. Hmm.

Too much right? I dunno. I kind of feel like the toolbox just doesn't jive with the offroad cred/aesthetic.

I think I'll lose cool points, but my toolbox functions as my "trunk".

As for MPG/wind resistance; I think an empty rack doesn't really contribute that much drag (when you're not using it).

I've never seen anyone use the roof rack. Not saying no one does, but if your truck didn't come with it standard, just go for the bed rack first. Later on if you need more space, get a prinsu roof rack.

All good! I've been looking pretty hard at a kbvoodoo mid height long bed rack, but it's hard to justify the price for a few camping trips a year.

I have the crossbars that KB Voodoo sells. I use a fishing rod holder and bike holder, but had planned on using a Thule roof box on them as well... but never put it on (just lazy).

One thing about KB's bars when using the OEM tonneau, is that I don't think you can slide the bar brackets under the tonneau where it folds up/clicks in. So you're some what limited in how wide your two bars can set. I'm not familiar with how baskets attach and if there's some flexibility in where they clamp on (my roof box has "claws" that slide front and back from within the box).

KB makes a drawer type basket that works with their mid height and tall racks (inside it), but not with the crossbars.

Here's the KB Voodoo thread on those bed bars, have you searched in there for baskets?

I've been through that entire thread, and I only saw one basket, from @Hellvillain. The setup is nice, but it may be a little smaller than I want. I'll keep searching:pccoffee:

Have you looked into the Yakima MegaWarrior basket. You can mount it in the bed with crossbars.

    https://www.yakima.com/megawarrior#

AutoAnything sells them. I was, and may still go this route as well. Hit up @eccracer104 via PM.
