I am the owner of a 2014 Tacoma Baja. Love the truck but it has a small vibration under acceleration at 55 to 60 mph. Not when coasting at that speed. Quite a few posting on this. One solution is a one piece drive shaft. Steel one piece can cause issues due to weight. Has anyone out there tried or thought about trying a one piece carbon fiber drive shaft? It seems like other than cost this would be a great solution to driveline vibes and may even increase throttle response due to lighter weight. I have done quite a few searches and can find no vendors advertising carbon fiber for Tacoma. Mostly mustangs and other high performance cars that have similar issues. Also, I don't think aluminum is a good solution due to larger diameter needed. I'd love to hear some thoughts on this as I know there are some great technical members on the site.

Do you plan on off roading?

carbon fiber would get expensive to replace.

That would be cool. Pricey, but cool.

I've never heard of one being made for a truck though.

There have been no reported issues with T-case output shaft bearing wear for people who have replaced the stock driveshaft with a Tom Wood one-piece steel driveshaft. Weight increase over stock is minimal. You are overthinking this. :)

The Mustang carbon fiber driveshaft has seen delamination issues. All it takes is one pebble to nick the surface and water to get in.

So you want to buy a carbon fiber and probably expensive piece to fix a minor vibration from 55-60 mph? Just let it ride and get used to it, it is a truck. Talk to people with vibs from 25-75 and then re-evaluate your dilemma.

Take pix if you do it. :)

But seriously, the cost benefit ratio seems way out of whack here.

If it was bugging me, I'd look into isolating the carrier bearing with some rubber washers or some other low cost type fix.

    Your truck tho.

I had carbon fiber half shafts on my drag civic back in the day.

    Expensive. Really, really, expensive.

    Was it worth it?

    No.

Just how bad are your small vibes to even consider a cf driveshaft?
Consider warranty if it is a big small vibration. Now, if it is a small big vibration or a small bigger smaller biggish vibration with a small vibration then you may have something
Honestly, a huge waste of money imo.

M Both of My 350Zs had the carbon drive shafts and I was putting massive power down as they were drift spec.

If you rock crawl a lot with out spotters then you'd probably be better off with a quality steel shaft ( shaft ! Haha ! ) otherwise I've heard of people flipping the carrier bearing 180 from factory to degree shims on the axle. Trouble shoot that beast and I'm sure you may find an issue to throw money at.

If you're sure it's the shaft grab a junk yard donation and do a swap to verify it is the shaft. It might get you going in the right direction . . .

I'd get a chrome moly one piece drive shaft before I get a expensive carbon fiber piece.

Or just remove the driveshaft and check vibrations in 4Hi.

I would never spend the money to get a CF driveshaft.. especially when this is a possibility..

this happened 2 days ago.. lol

its a truck, and the vibes are just the nature of the beast most of the time.. I would rather put up with the vibes and save money, then spend $$$ and then damaging it.. or it not even solve the problem.

You should invest in an e-locker actuator skid:

It's more than those speeds. Dealer says it's normal. Worth a grand to me to smooth out. I don't off road, wife liked the way truck looked so we own it. With all the cash members throw at trucks, like 1000's to replace new sound systems, wheels, super chargers, lighting, exhaust systems, air intake, etc. etc. A grand does not seem like to much to smooth out a $36,000 truck. Just wanted to see if anyone had done it so I could see result.

    Hahaha. Thanks??

ATRAC may or may not have been involved.. :spy:

Oh its definitely on the list.. lol. I soon came to realize I should invest in some skids. Thinking actuator and diff skids are first.

Torque for daaaaaaayyyyyss... but no. :( lol

    Just this...
