Only way is to key off front air bag.

It's not the safest place for a child to be, and you'll have no passengers.

Part of being a parent is sacrifices.

For the 1st year my kid was mostly in the wife's car anyway.

It’s hard to fit any child seat in an access cab. The space even still sort of sucks in a double cab compared to an SUV or car. And it doesn’t get better until you get to forward facing which will be a while.

I can’t help as much for a newborn but for a toddler who is now forward facing I have a Diono 3RXT behind my seat which sits a bit more vertical, and since that’s the only side that has the anchors in the later year 2nd gen access cabs. I had to remove the headrest and cut it off at its bracket because it forces the top of a car seat forward. Then put the car seat anchor bracket back in and set everything up. Works great.

Only made this compromise because my we generally ride around in my wife’s car.

    This thread may/may not help:

why i replaced my 90 Toyota my kids' seats didn't fit in the access cab, though knowing how huge my car seats now a Tundra might have been the real ticket.

    Sell it.

Putting a car seat in the front seat is a bad idea

I have an access cab. Kids seat straps in fine in the passenger side back seat. But the front seat goes forward too far to be useful for any normal sized person.

Thanks! Congrats to you as well. Wife kicks me bc I was originally entertaining a 4Runner but 25yr old me thought an access cab was less $$$ and would pull more chicks.

I bought the lady an AWD highlander. Will do the trick as the primary familymobile.

Gold! Photo of your success is what I need, although my jump seats are the newer 2nd gen with fold up head rest. Not sure which has more space.

we’ll roll in the familymobile if the wife is joining. just me, the kid and the dog kind of stuff in the taco - go to the park or pickup takeout.

please save me from putting around in her old Jetta. Lol.

We didn’t have a problem with rear or front facing car seats in my AC. Helps that the wife is 5’3 so the seat can go pretty far forward, but our daughter who is pretty tall for her age fits fine.

Plus the kid loves the truck, way more than moms car so she’ll put up with the uncomfortableness to get to ride in it.

    This is the current setup:

Im also 5’9” and sit relatively closer to the steering wheel, which luckily gives my kid a little more leg room.

I crammed that fat plastic buckle through the welded metal loop under the headrest in a variety of manners until it popped through. It barely fits. It’s also a pain in the butt to then tighten. Then for the seat belt i pretty much put my knee and weight in the bottom of the seat while I pulled it tight to remove the excess seat movement.

To get the seat to sit back against the wall as flush as possible for more leg room I ended up removing the headrest assembly and chopping the headrest off of it, then bolted it back in to retain the seat tether.

It’s a lot just to fit the seat.

Yea I was out there with a hammer and i was like this is crazy this isn’t gonna fit I guess I’ll have to really try to get the mofo in there trm.

Did you use a grinder or blot cutter to cut the headrest Assembly?
Yea I agree with you I moved the car seat in my other car from backward to forward in no time at all. Than my truck took over and hour to do the same. Thanks again your post saved me from possibly have to get a new vehicle

I removed the rear interior plastic assembly in my 09, unbolted the headrest assembly, and hacksawed off the two 1/2" headrest support columns. The only carseat anchors are on the drivers side iirc. My avatar has my son seated in the back of the truck. It took some wrestling to get it in there nice and tight and properly anchored, but it's possible. I'm 5'11 and was able to drive with my seat in the same position, no different than before, but I tend to keep the seatback rather upright. Rear facing would be pretty much impossible in back of the AC, I think. We had the rear facing seat in the front for a while with the wife sitting in the back on the drivers side. It was more comfortable than 3 across in our regular cab manual transmission Ford Ranger we had previously.
