Thanks. I was thinking it would be a pain, but less of a pain than what was shown in the video.

Regardless of opinions on TCCN's channel, the videos he provides are useful to me (a "Shade tree" mechanic) for the in-depth and good video quality repairs.
TCCN did a 3 part series on Tacoma about a year ago. I found it useful.

I drive about 12-15k a year and do it seasonally. Once in the spring and once in the fall. The wally world boxes of havoline are convenient.

Not sure what oil threads are my favorite; the oil change, the oil weight or the people who fret over what kind of grease they pump into their zerks every six months.

My point was, I wouldn't be changing my oil monthly, when driving conditions do not warrant it.
    In California, a Loma Linda to Chula Vista commute is about 120 miles/240 round trip...x 22 work days...about 5,000 a month...doing 75mph. Nah...10K OCIs.

OCIs for my current driving habits are 7,500 miles/6 months, whichever comes first.

Overall point being, there's a lot of gray area between the black & white of the proponents of 5K or 10K OCIs.

The whole 5K 10K thing....AMD is recommending 5K based on HIS experience in a Toyota shop. If you have watched any of his other videos, esp those involving the oil-burning issues on 2AR-FE engines, you will find that his customers WERE doing 10K oil changes and STILL had the ring issues with that engine. Based on that and I am sure other engine examples, he is recommending 5K oil changes. Watch some of the videos before ya'll condemn him.

    Didn't watch...
So he has customers with similar driving habits and 5K OCIs that don't have issues?
Customers with 10K OCIs that don't have issues?
    Why apply 2AR-FE to 2GR-FKS?
How does changing oil that hasn't lost it's capacity to clean and lubricate make a difference?
He infers a lot by only what he observes...

My take is, the longer the interval the more contaminates and acidic the oil is. This finds weak spots such as sealant on the timing cover. It also exaggerates any crankcase gas problems.

The ring lands on the 2az and 2ar is awful, I attribute it to design, but quality oil and correct intervals helps.

Every 2.4 I work on has excessive blow by, regardless of care. But with the 2.5s we see more oil burning and more timing cover leaks from the longer intervals than the old intervals.

I’ve yet to set a Tacoma cover leak on a 5k oci though.

simply observations, no engineering or scientific proof.

That's basically it, everyone's driving habits are different. Do your oil changes when driving conditions warrant it. Not everyone has a long commute and highway driving.

Heck, my previous job was 3 minutes down the road in town doing stop and go. I also have an older vehicle with high miles which is why I'd be doing it sooner and would be doing it with a new car as well with those driving conditions.

Right, but the man in question is very black or white on 5k oil changes. He has attributed multiple major engine failures to 10k OCIs, which given that it’s the Toyota recommended interval makes that claim highly controversial.

He has multiple videos and claims that the oci is the source of many ailments. If found to be untrue it calls into question a lot of the other content.

    Exactly...
My current commute is 50 miles a day.
I've had commutes that were 6 miles per day. In those instances, it's 5K/6 month OCIs.
Some years, I struggled to put 1,500 miles on it....those were 5K/12 month OCIs.

Like I said, he infers a lot by only what he observes.
He has no data on the other side of the coin to support his position.

I believe that’s a problem. At least it is to me. Hard to take a lot of the information in as fact when it may not be as such. If it’s a one of thing that’s fine, but I have watched at least 20 of his vids and it’s constantly being reiterated.

    https://youtu.be/IN-z0_LSMyk

Here he has his Camry … 3 oil changes by 5k miles and less than 1 year old.

His customers have a few things in common...
    1. They're customers; he doesn't fix cars without problems
    2. Location
    3. They're Lexus/Toyotas

How much is a design/production problem vs driving habits vs God knows what else? 20 videos...and I'm sure he's seen a lot more in his day... To me, it doesn't really mean a whole lot without complete context.

    Agreed.

But this particular YouTube channel constantly re-affirms the need for 5k or sooner oil changes “or else”, which is followed by catastrophic engine damage displays and such.

Since this thread was started based on a video of his, I believe it calls this into question.

Since we are all about anecdotal evidence, I changed my 2007 V6 Rav4 oil every 5K (the recommended interval). at 200K miles when I traded it in, no observable oil consumption. So far I have been sticking with 10K interval suggested for my Tacoma.

I'm curious as to what makes the Tacoma able to have a 10k oci vs the 5k oci on the rav4. Isn't the v6 a different variation of the 3.5 used in the Tacoma, both derived from 2gr fe? Does your rav4 require 0w20 like the tacoma?

it seems like the rav4 also has 10k OCI’s.

The person I asked has a 2007 rav 4 v6(3.5 2gr fe). The link you sent may apply to brand new rav4s.

Edit: Also I'm wondering for anyone who has a 2007 rav4 with v6 or any years within that generation, what the manual states for oil weight.

The whole reason why 0w20 is being implemented is for epa or mpg requirements.

*Just googled 2007 rav4 v6 oil change interval, this came up.

"Toyota recommends getting your Toyota RAV4 oil & filter changed every 3,000-5,000 miles for conventional oil. Synthetic oil ordinarily should be changed every 7,500 - 10,000 miles."

Do I not say as much in the post you quoted? And besides, "20 videos", was in response to the member I was conversing with.
Not sure what your point is...

People that say the engineers did this or they designed it that way have never been in a meeting about these kind of decisions.

Engineers do not get to decide what ends up in the final manual and when something says its designed by an engineer, there are constraints put on it for cost, packaging, service life, etc.

The switch to 10k mile intervals was driven by economics when manufacturers started covering initial maintenance and selling maintenance packages.

Milage is a poor indicator of engine maintenance life, engine hours is what should he used but the average person would not follow that.
