So what is going to help him make more money?
    Not the best info.
    Not the boring info.
    Not the safe info.

Just like news, if it bleeds it leads. People will follow if they agree with the presenter and more will follow. It can be a falsehood but if people believe it, people will still follow it
If it is truth and fact but gullible people don't believe you because you suck at presenting or because it makes people feel uncomfortable to hear the actual truth, you get no followers or money.

Humans are gullible. They want to feel good. They want to be happy and have warm fuzzy feelings. Sometimes the truth does not do that so they look for other sources where like minded people are gathered and they feel better, even though it is not the truth.
Compare that guys videos to the owners manual. Compare that video to actual statistics from the real world. They are much different but, statistics are cold and boring and present the truth that might not match your preconceived notions that makes you happy.

I watch YouTube for entertainment, not for learning. I watch qualified videos for learning that are put together by manufacturers of equipment I own.

To me, it is absurd to research and decide, on my own, to purchase a product like a Tacoma and then question the validity and truth from the people who designed and built the truck!
And then listen to a guy with zero qualifications (but entertaining) and believe him instead because it makes some of us feel better.

Just out of curiosity, what caused you to form that opinion of him?

FWIW: I'm an engineer, and I find it very interesting for example that the 787 with top notch engineering is suffering so many design and quality problems. Systems are getting more and more complex. It's not possible for mere mortals to have an accurate mental model of how things are designed to function, because more and more of it is hidden, more and more of it is optimized with margin removed, more and more of it uses exotic materials or processes of manufacture. The complex may have sub-systems designed and implemented by teams, sometimes with competing goals, sometimes in different countries, sometimes not fully tested until integrated... Sometimes without one team being sensitive enough to the impact their solutions to a problem may yield to failure modes not considered...

I'm not arguing with your assessment or your knowledge. I'm also not saying a Toyota engine is as complex as a Boeing 787. Do I take what I see on YouTube (name the topic) as "gospel"? No. However, it does provide a medium for others to see and learn from those who have more proficiency, or have certain helpful technique acquired through years of exposure to problems in their area of expertise.

It has value which can extend well beyond "entertainment", depending.

I watched a guy change and alternator on a Tundra before I did. I learned something for sure so yes, not just pure entertainment.
He also did not opine on the Tundra design, location of alternator or anything else which I find refreshing.
I, like everyone else, have my own opinions, so I do not need someone else to tell me what to think.

But that's just lil ol dumb me.

TCCN is about as qualified as any Toyota tech ever will be. I take what he says to the bank. The man is/was recently a Toyota/Lexus Certified Master Technician who now owns his own Toyota/Lexus repair shop. He was taught and certified to work on these cars and trucks by the manufacturer. He has seen so many more real world examples of cause & effect failures on these systems than most people on these forums will ever see.

As always, people are free to do as they wish. It’s their vehicle and their money.
However, to question his bonafides is some sort of sour grapes or personal vendetta, because there’s no way it’s rooted in logical fact.

How many 3.5 engines has tacoma god replaced? Some engines toyota manufactured in the past were sludge engines and burnt oil if you didn't do 5k oil changes using a quality synthetic.

This. I just wish he was close to me. I would for sure be a customer for anything that popped up beyond my mechanical abilities

I feel like he's got a six month wait list for oil changes. In the vid he says he had to shut the shop down to pull that motor - which means he's a 1.5 man band over there.

I like the guy, but he's a sedan mechanic who knows how to set up the cars to the manufacturer's spec - textbook only. I have a feeling he'd be the one to tell you that you're SOL because you flashed a tune or even ran different sized tires. It's only my opinion, but I like line from Apollo 13: "I don't care what it was designed to do, I care about what it can do."

Yea you make a good point. It just seems like if you need your engine pulled I’d feel more comfortable with him doing it than some unknown at a local dealership

I think his view on that OCI relates to pretty much all toyota engines based on the internals, makes no diff to me I have my own OCI I use and it works for me.

I must've watched a different video because mine was a boring video of a mechanic repairing a leaky 3.5L toyota.

He looks like he does a decent job. People on here got all butthurt when he said that it's better to do more frequent oil changes vs 10k that toyota recommends. There are some tacomaworlders who think 1) tacomas are perfection and 2) toyota is also perfection. So when someone has a problem (rear diff making noise, engine problems, paint falling off) their knee jerk reaction is to throw insults or spam posts about how "my truck never has a problem I am keeping it forever" lol.

Just did a service on my small tractor. I follow the original manual to the letter. Why? Because I truly do not know better than the guys who wrote it and are giving me hours until belts changed, until plugs change, etc.

My tractor is a simple beast. It is old and does a great job. The Tacoma is a space ship compared to my tractor so why would I question the maintenance described in the manual? Because of some guy on YouTube trying to make a dollar on his content?
    Um no.

You ever heard of David Tracy? A automobile journalist? Well, before he did that he designed automotive cooling systems. I absolutely listen to him when he talks about radiators and air flows, but not if he talked about human relationships or basketball.
The guy above is good at making videos and talking. As far as I know he has never designed or extensively tested a fucking thing.
I do woodworking as a hobby and know a bit about it as I have been doing it for 30 years. However, there are many better than me so I listen to the good ones, not the ones who can talk well and know how to make videos for money.
    See my point?

I'll be honest, I change my oil at 5k because both he and a guy at my dealership said it's a good idea.

Anyone whom has spun wrenches for a living can see this man is knowledgable. he shares his experiences with those that want to watch his videos and….maybe learn something.

What you chose to do with said knowledge is up to you.

I have no tools or a space to do repairs nor do I care to. I find info provided by folks such as TCCN helpful along with others. If I have to deal with such issues as a timing chain cover leak I have a better understanding of what's going on as I have to rely on one trusted Mechanic and my local dealership's service shop. Both have been satisfactory so far. I also read the owners manual and have drawn my own conclusions on what works best for me. Sometimes just plain old luck goes a long way too.

Ultimately, many of us here want little drama and something that's is going to get us reliably to our destinations without concern or fear of being stranded. Preventative maintenance works for me as I like to keep my vehicles a long time. The more you know or care to know the better I would think.

The car care nut guy seems very knowledgeable and all his videos seem very informative.

He doesn't seem like one of those guys who would put out misinformation just to get views or make money from YouTube.

I will link this video where he talks about maintenance including oil changes. Call me crazy but every 6 months/5k seems like the more reasonable interval to do oil changes. 10k seems like stretching it, even if it is "fully synthetic." It gives me peace of mind and I'd rather drop the money for an oil change compared to having an engine failure or a much higher cost of something failing.

I find it peculiar why anyone who takes Toyota’s maintenance plan as gospel will spend time perusing maintenance threads and take even more time to tell us all we’re stupid for not doing what he does. Why not skip these threads if you don’t agree with them?
