I've followed the book 3 times and gotten nothing. All 4 wheels display "--" and the orange light on the dash is on.

No, still the same sensors from factory. When I tell you this is not the most competent tire shop I am really giving them the benefit of the doubt. I'll ride over and see if they have that tool to reset them.

just a stab, but did you drive the vehicle after doing the book reset?

its takes while for them to register a new psi sometimes and wont register unless driven a certain distance.

even when I replace the oem rims with aftermarket rims re-using the original TPMDS sensors I never had an issue with an orange light. i do know that the sensors take a distance issue to give a proper psi reading, even sitting over night i will get -- on the info display.

Not to hijack thread, but does anyone know if the sensors from the older Tacomas (2006 -2015) would be the same as the 2017?

depends on the freq the transmitters use and the receiver is expecting. you would have to dig into the specs between the models to see what freq's they used.

I imagine tire-rack or discount-tire can give you and idea.

So I went back to the shop, they had some little transmitter that they tried to make work, but it didn't. Keep in mind, when I got back to the shop I realized my front tires were on with letters out, while my back tires were on with letters in (like I said earlier, this is not the most competent tire shop). I got them to pull off all tires, so I could make sure sensors were not broken, then remount/rebalance them with all letters out.

From there I proceeded to follow the book again, and have now driven 100 miles, still orange light (and after about 30 miles of driving it starts blinking) and the "--" next to each tire on the screen.

This is ridiculous. I just wanted so god damn all terrains.

Even if the original factory sensors were used, they need to be reprogrammed if they were moved to different wheel locations. Similar to a tire rotation. I had a similar problem with the dash low tire pressure light blinking. The local Toyota dealer wanted $100 to trouble shoot and program the sensors. I knew there had to be a less expensive way.

I then went to a local tire dealer who told me they didn't have an updated programming tool for the 2016 Tacoma. I told them that the 2015 Camry used the same sensors. They tried to program it as a 2015 Camry, a 2015 Tacoma, and a 2014 Tacoma. The dash light continued to flash. As a last ditch effort, they tried programming it as a 2014 Camry. The dash light went out. Don't know why it worked with their programming tool as a 2014 Camry but it worked. They didn't charge me a cent to program the sensors.

It was explained to me that once the dash light goes out, the TPMS system is working. All I needed to do was drive a few miles to activate the pressure readings. Sure enough, after about 8-10 miles driving 30-35 mph, the pressure readings appeared.

It was also explained to me that to save battery power in the sensors, they go to sleep when the truck isn't moving and all you will see are the --. That is why each morning when you start the truck, pressure readings are not present.

Sometimes you have to get up to over 70 mph for them to read. They could have broken them all too.

Okay, so went to a different tire shop this morning, one that I trust and told them my issue. They got their tools out and try to scan for the sensors, nothing. I told them that I read online (here) that someone had success scanning it as if it were a camry or corolla. Well the tried the corolla and it worked. He was able to pick up all 4 sensors, however no luck at resetting them. He was able to tell me that they are all 4 in good working order though, but no clue why they aren't working/ can't be reset.

I have my 10k service on monday, so I hope to get some feedback from toyota.

Having similar issue. New tires, TPMS worked for the drive home then displayed the "--" reading for all 4 tires. Had Discount Tire, the guys who installed the tires, troubleshoot and 3 of the sensors registered with their diagnostic tool but one failed. Might suggest the Corolla thing.

The Toyota dealer has the properly programmed tool to fix the problem, but I'm pretty sure they will charge an outrageous fee. If the dash light is out, you might just try resetting them by pushing the reset button and drive a few miles and see if they reset themselves. When you push the reset button, the dash light should blink 3 times and go out.

When I get in the truck and turn the ignition the light is blinking automatically and does so for 1-2 minutes before going solid. Once it goes solid I try to push and hold the reset button (per the manual) but nothing happens. I will see what toyota says on monday. I'm not paying a dime for this fix. When I brought it to get tires all 4 sensors were working. When I pulled out none were working. If toyota wants to get their dime they can kick rocks and I'll just have to waste a day going back to the original tire dealer, which I am dreading doing.

When you get in the truck and turn the key to start the truck, all of the dash lights should light and then go out when the truck starts. (It is a test of the entire electrical system.) If the low tire pressure light blinks, and then goes solid, the TPMS system is not set up properly.
Hopefully, toyota will fix the problem at no charge. It only takes them a few minutes to program the sensors to the truck. The problem is that most tire dealers don't have the upgraded programming for the 2016 Tacoma. I was fortunate that my sensors programmed as a 2014 Camry.

I don't think older sensors will work in the 2016 or 2017.
Here are the part numbers for the newer sensors.

for 2016/2017 Tacoma's, the Toyota Part Numbers for TPMS sensors are:

    Alloy Wheels: P/N 42607-06030 (PMV-C015)

    Steel Wheels: P/N 42607-04020

. If you get in the vehicle and light flashes for 1 min then goes solid it means there is something wrong with the system and I would bet anything that 1 or more of the sensors got damaged during the tire change. My taco did the same thing and had to end up replacing a new sensor

I just had my old sensors moved to different wheels with new tires, the light didn't even hiccup. And no way they went back in the same position. Guessing my 'simple' gen 2 setup is the reason?

OP, keep us up on what the dealer says.
