Hey taco lovers! Got a quick question. Just got my new truck, and I was talked into getting the Toyota extra care AND prepaid maintenance plan. So I walked away with a new car and realized that almost of my down payment went to all this extra crap than my actual car loan.

Some reason, I feel like I got shafted by Toyota. TWICE! here’s what it looks like:
    1. Toyota Extra Care Platinum for 7 years/125,000 miles, costed a whopping $4,100
    2. PrePaid Maintenance for 5 years/55,000 miles, costed $1,981

So I am still within the cancelation window. I have always been a do it yourself kinda dude, with oil changes and such. So it’s so weird for me to justify paying this much for this as I have a 11 year old Honda Civic that Have never bought an extended warranty on, and I don’t think I have paid $6,000 on maintenance.

I have a 2020 taco, and for 3rd gen, aren’t they supposed to be reliable?

what do you guys think about cancelling
    ?

    thanks!

I would cancel, $1981 for 5 oil changes is nuts.

Even if you’re outside of the cancellation window you are entitled to cancel all warranties. You will receive a prorated refund for how “much” of the warranty you used. It’s the law. Example: my truck has 10K on the odo and I have a 100K warranty. I’ve used 10%. If I were to cancel my warranty I’d receive 90% of what I paid for it.

To cancel you just talk to the finance guy. Note: the finance person won’t be happy since they make their commission on warranty sales, but that’s tough shit.

Trucks are plenty reliable and those prices are ridiculous. If you can, crawl under your truck, learn about it, perform maintenance yourself, and save thousands. These trucks are simple to work on if you’re wiling to learn.

Cancel. Not only is it not good value, but I'm guessing you financed it as well, which means you are paying interest on maintenance.

My favorite part of buying an automobile is the look on the Finance Manager's face as I sternly repeat "No" on the extended warranty up sell.

I'd personally cancel them but some people like them for peace of mind. If that's you I'd still call and tell them to cancel. They'll drop the price and you should easily be able to get it for half (if not less) than what you paid.

I thought there was an east coast dealer that was selling extended warranties over the phone for like 1K a while back?

Just added up my receipts from maintaining my 3rd gen for 35k miles. Came out to $290 including oil and tire rotations every 5k, diff, t-case, filters, and new trans fluid. That’s using all high quality synthetics/Toyota OEM parts on a severe service maintenance schedule. Toyota will stick to the normal schedule, and charge you $2000 for not even twice my mileage. At my rate of service out to 60k miles, I’d likely spend $650 tops and take better care of the truck.

    edit: and save ~$1300

I think it's way too high in your case, I paid $1500 for the 8 year 125K Toyota warranty.

You don't drive a late model BMW. Cancel that nonsense. Especially that prepaid maintenance. IMHO you got hosed especially hard on that one...

The Lexus Platinum powertrain warranty I got for my mall queen came out to less than $3600 total.

EDIT I just rechecked my fiance agreement since I'm paying $48/month for that coverage for my LX570 it's more like $2900 plus I'm covered 2 years after my payments end. Yup $4100 for a powertrain warranty on a TOYOTA TACOMA is insane. Cancel ASAP.

It is my understanding that those warranties just run inline with your standard 3 year warranty and 2 year Toyota Care that is included with your purchase. So in essence, you're paying $4100 for 4 years of extra warranty and $1981 for 3 years of Toyota Care. IMO I'd much rather have $6081 in the bank and use that money to tackle any problems that may arise down the road, then have it locked up with Toyota. I would cancel both in a heartbeat.

Same here. Told the up-sell idiot not to add anything on as I would never be back and would never get a vehicle serviced at a dealer anyway! He didn't like that.

The finance guy at the dealership where I bought my truck was pretty adamant about me getting the Toyota ExtraCare warranty, he tried to convince me for an hour and a half explaining different scenarios in which is would be useful and the different levels of the ExtraCare warranty that they had but when I saw the price on it I kept telling him no and he kept on trying to push me to get it until I told him "look I dont want to be rude but I think that Toyota's are pretty reliable and I prefer to pay out of pocket if I have to fix something instead of paying for an extra warranty" then he kept on trying to say stuff about that the vehicle is made by Toyota but all the little parts on the truck like the radio, the tire pressure sensors, etc are made by different companies and how much they costs to replace if something goes wrong:rofl: I told him "ill take my chances" because he was being really pushy (they probably get a commission or have a quota of how many people they have to sign up for it).

On my way home from the dealership that day they were doing road construction and they closed off all the lanes except for 1 lane in each direction on my way home, sadly on the way home on this road (a 180 mile drive back home) my truck got a rock chip on the tailgate half the size of a dime, a rock chip on the front passengers side door about the same size, a rock chip on the roof that I didnt discover until recently, and some small specks of rock chips on the hood and front passengers side door... all these rock chips happened on one day (the day I was driving 180 miles back home from the dealership).

I thought doh! maybe if I had that Toyota ExtraCare warranty they would fix the rock chips for free and repaint the truck in the affected areas but even if I pay out of pocket im sure it wouldnt add up to $4,100 to have a body shop fix some small rock chips.

Most insurance plans are usually scams and have little clauses where they can deny claims when its convenient for them anyway.
