Last time I bought a car, helped a friend buy a car, I told the salesman, I do not want anyone trying to sell me anything when I sign the papers, I want to only see the papers needed that pertains to me and the vehicle. So no finance person helped me, the salesman did the paperwork with me and I was out with the car in 15 minutes.

I realized I overpaid for mine too. Gonna try to get a refund check to me rather than the lienholder, doubt it'll work that way but hey. Can always hope.

I wonder if it varies by vehicle.

Good on you man, $2500 is a complete ripoff. I finally relented and signed up for one when they offered it for 7 years at $750 on our 2019. I just kept saying no until they came down to something realistic. I probably didn't need it, but figured I could live with it at that price. I hate that dealerships still pull this shit, it ruins the experience to have someone take advantage of you while you are doing something you have worked hard for.

It varies from vehicle to vehicle and how long the term is as well.

The retail price might....but the cost does not. And usually the salesperson has nothing to do with it. That's normally the F and I person....or business manager as they are sometimes called

Well when I bought the taco, the dealership pushed a 125k mile warranty.

On the Rav purchase this weekend, a different dealer pushed a whole lotta stuff that felt like an insurance plan.

Both called it "Platinum", but could not be more different.

It's important to make sure it's Toyota's extended warranty vs a 3rd party. Not all 3rd party warranties are junk. Some are pretty good. And most of the ones that large reputable dealers sell are decent.

But IMO if you're going to buy one, you might as well get Toyota's. Generally speaking it costs more. But they cut and dry in terms of coverage and are honored at any Toyota dealership.

I purchased a Platinum for my current rig. I didn't did get the 10yr/125k. I went with 8yr/125k based on my yearly driving of about 15k per year. It was a couple of hundred dollars cheaper.

Is that essentially 5 years / 89K miles beyond the factory 3 year / 36K mile warranty?

You can look at it that way. But it has some perks from the beginning...like hotel coverage and rental vehicles, etc

    NO SHIT....
I've always felt that buying a brand new rig (WOO-HOO!!) should be a Super Happy-Time, right? Like the commercials on TV where a brand new rig is in your driveway, Xmas morning, with a gigantic red bow wrapped around it, and you're getting kisses and hugs from the wife and kids.
Sadly, it's like ... Not even close.

and posts like this with detailed dealer/seller info is why toyota usa usually comes down and shuts down these dealers and ruins it for everyone. keep that info in private conversations.
