Here is what a cable looks like.

I used this one to activate a "backup copy" of updated maps on my X3

Just an FYI, CANBUS in this reference is short for "Controller Area Network bus". It is used in many automotive applications for communications between controllers / computers and some sensors.

The Tacoma does in fact use the Can Bus Protocol. They have since 2005, and it has been a requirement since 2008.

    • ISO 15765 CAN (250 kBit/s or 500 kBit/s). The CAN protocol was developed by Bosch for automotive and industrial control. Unlike other OBD protocols, variants are widely used outside of the automotive industry. While it did not meet the OBD-II requirements for U.S. vehicles prior to 2003, as of 2008 all vehicles sold in the US are required to implement CAN as one of their signaling protocols.

As @Jimmyh pointed out, yes. It does.

Please pardon the other jokers responses.

They are so used to seeing first posts always being about the 'cheapest 3" level lift' and 'what size tires can I fit' that they were stunned by a meaningful question.

I've never done it before, but I'm sure I could figure it out. Still wouldn't "figure it out" on my own truck though...

Did this ever go anywhere ? I just picked up a CANable and some OBDII connectors. Going to see what I can see on my 2015 Gen 2

For others that may come across that thread. I have successfully mapped the steering wheel controls of my 2012 TRD to an ATOTO SA102 starter using the ground, SW+ and SW# wires on the radio harness to pin 6-7-8 (respectively) on the 20 pin connector of the car. After pairing the keys in the radio interface, everything works fine without any additional control box.
