    Hi,
Does anybody have Bull Dog canopy-offered by Cap-it? It looks OK, it's just the capless aluminum trim doesn't look too good, but the pricing is reasonable.......

This Cap-It ad keeps popping up on my Facebook/IG and since I have a Cement OR, I feel very targeted. The price point seems great. I got a quote on a ARE CX-R and I was quoted $5200 with options from Action. Woof.

@travadol I priced out a CL two years ago at the Edmonton auto show for the same price, around $1,800 with carpet, paint match and folding window, they said they had a special price for the auto show. The only options they offered were carpeted or not and folding window or not and paint match or gloss black. The Cap It rep told me that they had a partnership with Leer/Raider and they were just re-badged Leer 100r/Raider Vagabond.

I paid $3,000 for a Ranger Rider Sport, carpeted headliner, single led interior light and Yakima roof rails painted cement gray when I traded from a 16 to an 18 about a month after I got the quote, I'm regretting my choice.

My Range Rider leaks like a sieve. I've readjusted the gaskets and seals I don't know how many times and the canopy needs to be moved back in to position at least once every month or two as the clamps just don't hold it in place. There's a one inch or larger gap between the rear window door opening, glass and the tailgate that even with the glass latched, closed and locked, I've had junkies pull the cables and open it up a handful of times now. I ordered it with a fold down front window and recieved a solid window and the supplier I bought it from just dances around all the with it and refuse to do anything about it because I ordered it through the dealer with my new truck.

I'm going to guess that you have a wrong cap, for a different truck or model. There shouldn't be a one inch gap, and clamps should hold it in place. Leaks are quite common, but such a big gap and shifting is not.

Sounds like a 2nd Gen cap on a 3rd gen.. Does the top of the cap stick up an inch or two higher that the cab of the truck?

I'd be making a ton of noise at my dealership. They're the ones who ordered it for you.

Sits 100% flush with the top of the cab. I was told it was one of the first canopies they made for the 3rd gens.

-Dealer, while having been very VERY good to me repairing and doing a fair bit of my out of warranty work for free, won't touch the canopy as it's an aftermarket part and as much as I've raised a fuss in the last two years of owning it, has proved useless.

-Canopy supplier will re-adjust and re-clamp the cap as often as I need it at no cost and replace the gasket as often as needed on their dime but refuse to repair or replace anything beyond that.

So I went to my local Leer/ARE/Range Rider dealer. Range Rider is definitely the budget friendly option and I'd be all-in at around $3000. Leer and ARE are going to be closer to $4000 just because they're made in the States.

I asked him what he thought about the Cap-It one, and he thinks it's just a rebadged low-end Leer, but Cap-It's website says it's built in Canada by Canadian workers. I'd ideally like to keep my money north of the border, if at all possible. I went to Arrow's website, and they make a nice product but don't have a dealer list.

A topper is a must-have for me now, since the dogs will be demoted to the back as I have a kid on the way.

I went with the Leer DCC Wedge a few months back...like it but going to sell it as I’ve realized I want a camper instead.

What did that set you back? It wouldn't fit in my garage but I really like it.

Another pricing update as I shop around. Stopped into my local Cap-It to inquire about the Bulldog line that they've been aggressively marketing lately. They are built by Range Rider in BC for Cap-It. The top of the line model, as posted earlier, comes well-optioned and rang in around $3600 plus tax installed. This includes the drop-down, sliding front window.

At the same time, I had them price out some Leers, both a 100R($3400ish) and 100XR($3700ish). The only difference between the two is the frameless rear window and the XR has the ability to have an electronic lock attached to it. Both of these were pretty "bare-bones" but I had them optioned with a roof-rack (which is pretty essential for my needs). I've heard various people claim that going frameless in Canada is a bad idea, since in the cold they are prone to breakage, which will set you back a few hundred for a replacement.

Something that stood out to me, is the thinness of the Range Rider/Bulldog topper. The guy showed me a Leer and a Bulldog side by side and pointed out the thickness of the fibreglass. The Leer is twice as thick! The Bulldog has a lifetime warranty, so it shouldn't be an issue... but a lot of those warranties are restrictive. Again, I'm always open to Canadian brands and supporting Canadian workers, first and foremost. However, I don't want to sacrifice quality in the name of patriotism.

My next stop is Action Car and Truck to price out some ARE Toppers as well as their own house brand of toppers. I'm getting a hitch installed there for my wife's car on Wednesday, so I'll ponder then and let you guys know what I find.

What I'm finding is that a serious lack of Canadian-made options makes shopping for these very expensive. Leer buying Raider (a company that built toppers right here in Saskatchewan) definitely hurt the market, but that's capitalism I guess. I've honestly considered upgrading my wife's SUV to something that can tow a decent amount instead of getting a topper. My primary purpose for getting a topper is for a safe place to put my dogs when we're towing the trailer, as our Forester is limited to 1500lbs. It might be a cheaper option, in the end.

Any leaks, how do you like the barn doors?

    Where are you located?

The Dealership took it back as it was the wrong one....now waiting for the new one. Barn doors work well with the Decked Unit.

I ordered the Cap-it Cl-t with added pet screens 5 weeks ago from cap it hoping it will be here soon and i will put up a full review. What led me to go with the bulldog was that it was Canadian built and my out the door price including paint match and install was around 2800. i got quotes from a few places for similar leer and a.r.e Toppers and they were around 4k

So I know I've said I'll be looking at cheaper options, but holy cow, the RSI SmartCap coming to Canada is huge. That is a product I'd be willing to pay a premium for. Self-install, easy install/removal, dog-friendly and looks fantastic.
