Can someone explain tire offset

I have noticed in the Ray 10 thread people making the comment of their off set after putting new wheels and tires on. Are you referring to how far out the tires are from the sides of the truck?

Do the wheels or tires cause this? Or is it a combination of both?

Also why does it cause this? Thanks!

 

Offset is how far the mounting point on the wheels is in comparison to the actual center of the wheel. Positive offset means the mounting point on the wheels is between the actual center of the wheel and the "outer" (away from your vehicle) portion of the wheel. While negative offset is the opposite. For the Tacoma generally lower offset is good (not too low) to prevent the big tires that some will run from rubbing. Plus most generally agree it looks better than a sunken in wheel.
