And is it practical? Mother Google returns a bunch of gibberish and double talk on this subject. The answer seems to be yes you can but....... So is anyone doing this? Do you recommend it?

    TIA

as long as the table itself has the ability to receive GPS signals, yes.

That's what I do, tablet with topo maps.

Yeah you can, I use Avenza maps, really great simple software that plots your location onto a topo map. Some maps you can get for free, sometimes you gotta pay a few bucks but its generally good quality stuff. You can also save offline maps to googlemaps. Plus you can use Gaia as well, more designed for hiking I think, but a really great app.

Says "yes, Glonass, BDS", whatever that is. It's a Galaxy Tab S Model SM-T800. It's old but was top of the line in it's day. Maybe I can still get some use out of it.

    Could install this:
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2

And then take it outside and see if it can get a GPS fix.

To my knowledge, Glonass is the Russian version of GPS, don't know what BDS is. But you can try Google maps offline for free and see if it works?
