you can, youll get crappy mileage though. but it certainly can be done. I guess its either pay to ship the car, or pay to ship the stuff. if you ship the car youll probably end up pulling a loaded trailer with stuff in it anyway

I'd tow the car, if not your hauling a trailer at least that heavy, if not heavier, across country. Plus you know your nice car is being taken care of.. Assuming you tie it down properly lol

I personally would ship it. You have to pay rental for the trailer extra gas all the hook ups. Plus you could possibly damage your truck and car in the process. Why not just drive your truck ship the mustang not have to worry about anything. If the shipping co damages it they will pay. I shipped vehicles a couple times due to my job and haven't had a bad expiriance. just my opinion though. If your strapped for cash you could probably save a little money hauling it yourself.

First Uhaul might not go for your Truck pulling a trailer with the car . They have very strict rules .

Second are you good enough backing with a trailer ??

At least with me it never fails I get into some tricky spots.

Car Dolly is an option but with a dolly you can`t back up which can lead to some extra interesting moments.

Towing a car with either method I would sure install a Transmission Cooler.

The rest is just common sense driving with a trailer.

I've tried to rent a Uhaul car trailer before and they would not rent it to me. They said the truck can't tow it. My truck is a 2008 TRD sport 6 speed.

The friend drive it for you would be good.

+1... Why take the chance to save a little money? Ship it. The shipper has insurance and you do to. Play it safe. Oh... Never mind.. It's a Ford!

A few months ago we towed my 16 foot boat fully loaded from North Carolina to Idaho with my '97 Tacoma, (which was loaded), with no issues or special set-ups. We even had a fishing kayak on top of the camper shell.
We have shipped a couple of vehicles. One was shipped in an enclosed van, but still got a ding in the back quarter panel that the company paid for and the other was on a car hauler. No physical problems, but the driver was an ass from a Slavic country who could barely speech American and tried to scam more money from us. You don't get a choice on who the drivers are. The shipping company's just use/hire someone going that way.

I would check all the options for cost.

Then figure out what to go with.

    Shipping the Car

    Towing the Car

Plus Expenses and a plane ticket.

Myself You could not pay me enough to fly commercial these days although I love to fly

Drive the Mustang to Calif, fly back to IL then drive the Tacoma. take two different routes and see the country.

Figure the trailer is about 2,000 lbs + 3,750 lbs for the car + whatever stuff is in the truck + people = a lot of weight to pull across the country through the Rockies. UHaul trailers have surge brakes which, I personally feel, don't give as much control as electric brakes. The trailer's brakes don't activate until the trailer tongue is pushing against the hitch pretty hard. I've experienced a poor UHaul adjusted brake system first hand which wanted to push the back end of the tow vehicle out when attempting to slow in a turn. If you set on towing, buy a trailer and then sell it. For me, I'd have it shipped - hands down. Go to UHauls site and see if it'll even let you configure a Tacoma pulling the Mustang. Also one way tows with UHaul aren't cheap.
