Hey guys I was wondering if Its okay to tow a mattress, a tv, some tools and some clothes on a 2005 Tacoma 2.7l Automatic 2wd 5lug?

    Uhaul says yes.
Uhaul would be 6x12 Enclosed Trailer.

I believe the towing capacity is 3,500 lbs.
    The trailer is 1,920 lbs.
As long as you don’t load more than 1,500 lbs. Then yes, you can tow it.

I’ve pulled the 6x12. It’s not aerodynamic at all.
I have a V6, I can tell it’s back there. Your truck isn’t going to like it.
    But it will pull it……..

Yes you can, but should you?

What you described should fit in a trailer half that size, so why do you need one that size? How much weight will you put in the trailer?

Hey OP, I would check your manual first, 5 lug Tacomas might have different tow specs than 6 lugs. When I do a Google search I only get the 6 lug specs…
And if you do tow, I would consider staying in 4th and at or below 55mph. I know my truck responds better to heavy tows in 4th but I have the 4.0, it might not be the same with the 2.7.

You don't say how far and over what kind of terrain/elevation. For reference. I towed an enclosed 5x8 Uhaul from the Seattle area to SoCal along I-5 with maybe 400lbs in it. With a 2nd gen offroad w/auto all stock and it cost me at least 3mpg. If you are doing across town go for it, but if it is across state or multiple states just rent a box truck. The wind resistance will kill you with the trailer.

U-Haul has a very strict policy if they felt the trailer was to much they will decline the rental.

It will be a long slow trip if it was me I would avoid the Interstates if at all possible . It sucks having Tractor Trailers flying past 20mph or more .

    Best of Luck!

Your probably ok if the trailer weights @TnShooter posted are accurate but I wouldn't want to go too far with it.

I'm going with NO! I see oversize tires on that truck which further reduces power. I also see a cap and several hundred pounds of gear on top of the cap. You have to also consider payload capacity, not just tow capacity. As long as you load that trailer light, the truck will just barely pull it with stock tires.

ASSUMING you can keep the total weight of the trailer and cargo to 3500 lbs that will eat up 450 lbs of your payload. The cap is another 200 lbs. Just a guess but let's call it 300 lbs for the other "stuff" on top of your truck. That gets you to an estimated 950 lbs added to your truck. The payload varies depending on the individual truck (it is printed on a sticker on the driver's door jamb). But around 1000-1200 lbs is typical. You could be around 1300 with a 4cyl and 2wd. But that only leaves you 50-350 lbs for the driver, passengers, and any other gear in the truck.

If my weight estimates are way too much and if I'm mistaken on the oversize tires, then it will be close. If that is the case, I might be willing to do this for a short trip. But not something cross-country.

Speaking of cross-country trips, altitude matters. If you're going to tow it above 5000' sea level that could be an issue. There is less oxygen at altitude and your engine doesn't put out as much power. It starts to be a problem over 5000' and a real problem in the Rockies at 10,000' or more.

Truck in the picture is a 3rd gen. OP is asking about a single cab 2nd gen. I venture a guess the picture is just to show the trailer.

Like I said, me too neither.
    I pulled one…..
I can’t imagine pulling one very far with a 2.7.

Sure, it can do it. You’ll need to use your gears.
You definitely going to have to let the ol’ girl eat.
That needle on the tach is going to find a new home up higher in the rpm range.

    It’s there for confusion…..

Either way, 2nd Gen 2.7 or 3rd Gen 3.5, that trailer is back there. And you’ll know it’s back there.

I do not ever remember anyone ever saying My Tow vehicle is to large.

It can be done if this is the only option. It will be a long miserable slow trip.

That was why I have the F350 7.3 for serious Towing in Comfort.

I towed all of my belongings in a 6x12 packed to the gills 1500 miles from PA to CO in my 6 cyl. I had mattress, boxspring, bedframe, all my tools, a TV, boxes of books, dishes, a solid oak table with 6 chairs. Don't know the weight. Don't care. It was 7 years ago and I didn't die. The frame of my truck didn't buckle.

I dont know how many tools you have, but it sounds like you want to tow a mostly empty 6x12 across town with less than 1000lbs. Suspension can probably handle it, but I'd go slow and brake early.

If you're that worried, all that shit would likely fit in a uhaul van.

I’ve done stuff with a 1st Gen 2.7 that some would never believe.
It involved hay and a hay wagon. That’s all I’m saying, I don’t need to be told how stupid I am.
I already know I am stupid. I remind myself daily.

I understand just what your saying not like you were going cross country .

    Was perhaps rain involved??

If you can back up a 4 wheel wagon with a pick up your my new Hero :thumbsup::thumbsup:

No rain. I didn’t back anything up.
And I didn’t go down any “steep” hills.
    4LO and slow.

    And square bales suck
    Alfalfa is even worse.

I miss my uncle and I miss the farm. But I don’t miss some parts of it.

Pulled one of them loaded to the gills with my 1st gen 2.7/5 speed. Moved from GA to WI, so definitely hit some mountains. Had a few 3rd gear hills, but she took it like a champ. Never had to drop below 60. I took full advantage of having manual hubs by starting in 4 lo (hubs unlocked) to gain two more lower gears (low range, 1st gear, 2nd gear, shift into high range and back to 1st-5th).

Hey So from Chicago to New Jersey about 780 miles. Its really expensive to take the box truck and then the car carrier 2000$, vs the 6x12 690$
