So looking on other forums I am reading stuff about how new cars can have all kinds of problems when you disconnect your battery because of the complexity of newer cars.

Problem is that I'm going to need to change the battery soon on my 2015 Tacoma 4 banger Prerunner. Does anyone know if it's okay with this truck to disconnect the battery for replacement? Any computer problems with doing this? Does anyone know of a way to find out which cars have this problem with disconnecting the battery? (I have four cars)

    Thanks

Nothing to worry about. Swap it out, and be on your way. I changed the battery on my second gen numerous times without issue.

shouldn't be a problem at all. youll lose settings and presets on your radio and depending on how long you leave it disconnected possibly some computer learning? but it wont damage anything.

The throttle position will take time to relearn, if its carboned up the idle will be really low for a day.

2015 shouldn't be too bad, just change the battery, turn the key on for 5 seconds, start it and let it idle.

Manufacturers typically recommend disconnecting the ground first and reattaching the ground last. I've never had a problem on any brand of vehicle.

I know Camry 's have that problem. My mothers 2003 camry has the idle problem when you disconnect the battery

My tacoma 2013 doesn't have that problem

I actually disconnected mine over night after I put larger tires on my '15. I did it on a whim in hopes that it would help reset the learned throttle positioning and I got a way better feel from accelerating, where before it was super sluggish. Might be confirmation bias, but I am happier now.

Once you replace the battery, the truck will probably start and immediately stall. Restart it and it will be fine.

    This is normal

    ^yes, came to post this.

If you turn the ignition on for a few seconds, then off again, then start the truck it doesn’t shut off.

If you have it done at Ebco they plug this thing under your dash so you don't loose your presets.

A 9 volt battery with a diode in series, connected to the + lead, - connection to ground (maybe through the cigarette lighter) supposedly will retain presets and keep the cpu alive. I changed mine without the 9 volt battery and had no problems, beyond losing radio presets.

Interesting. I don't know why it'd need a diode but it's interesting to me that 9 volts is enough to keep the CPU alive.

My Toyota shop changes batteries in the parking lot in about 30 seconds. They don't do anything but disconnect/reconnect and tighten up the tie-downs. Starts right up, nothing needs reprogramed. Might as well let them do it, it's figured in the price anyway. Plus I get better service life from their TrueStart batteries.

The diode is necessary to prevent the 12v battery from overpowering the 9v battery.

As has been said the 4 cyl gets all pissed off for a little while after the battery has been disconnected and idles low, rough, and sometimes stalls. It goes away after a bit.
