Can I add shift into 4wd on the fly?

    hi,

    i have an 01 manual transmission. it has the small shifter that is used to go into h4 and l4. to shift into h4 you are supposed to slow down to 25 mph or slower. can i upgrade this system to shift on the fly? if so how much do you think it would cost?

    I always take my foot off the gas and wait for the 4x4 light to come on the dash before i put the throttle back on. If i can help it i'll wait til i come to a stop light or something to shift into 4x4 but you won't hurt anything as far as i'm concerned to shift it on the fly, I do it a lot in the winter time.

    Also refer to the card on your visor, it should have everything there about properly using the 4 wheel drive

    I've shifted in and out of 4wd doing 70 down the interstate. I have the J shift so I let off the gas and pull it back. No poof of smoke. No grind. Just 4 wheel drive.

    Same here: Manual trans with a J-shift. I usually try to shift when I'm driving a little slower (55mph or less) but it works without a problem at higher speeds. I use the same technique as everyone described above.

    Started automatic. Swapped to manual
    Just don't try it in 4 low.

    Do you have to get out of your truck to manually turn a locking mechanism at each front wheel to be able to use 4WD?

    If the answer is no, then you have 'shift on the fly' already. If you do not have manual locking hubs, then you have ADD (automatic disconnect differential) toyota's version of shift on the fly.
