There is no simple multimeter test to validate or even quick check a MAF, however overall they are one of the more reliable components of a modern EFI control system--why do you suspect it to be an issue?

acording to the code menu the truck has all the symptoms, 147k miles & the check engine light code points to a fault in the maf sensor. 120$ for one at Oreilys and id shure hate to buy one if unnessary. some sensors / relays in general can be checked with a electrical meter.

I'm not sure if the 2nd gen MAF sensor is similar to 1st gen's but on the 1st gens you could clean them off with electrical spray cleaner. Just don't touch the sensor with the straw since it's fragile. It might be worth a try before you buy a new one.

You would have to clean it before you could test it, even if you had the stuff to do the test. They rarely go bad. I would just clean it. Get a 2-pack MAF spray cleaner and throttle body cleaner at Walmart, $12 or so, small cans, just enough. If the MAF is dirty, so is the TB. If cleaning doesn't work, at least you cleaned the TB and now it's ready for a new MAF sensor. Get an OEM. They're competitively priced. You don't want any Chinese junk.

As already stated, buy some MAF cleaner and get after it. Blast it good and let air dry for at least half an hour. This is not a part you would want to source from a mass-marketer like O'Reilley's - cheap made in China junk. Buy OE if necessary. You should be able to find an OE part on ebay. Toyota dealers sell parts there.

Mine was throwing a code and after I cleaned it the code went away. I used similar products/procedures as described above.
    I was more than happy.
All of this happened at rough 120,000 miles. If you have a lifetime air filter the oil from the filter can cause this.

    100% FUD...

Where do you think the "OEM" unit is made? No one tools up to specifically manufacture cheap MAF units for Toyota Tacomas at O'Reilly's or any other FLAPS--they are either OEM suppliers, or bought the tooling from Toyota when the models changed. Also O'Reilly's, an aftermarket auto parts supplier that has been in business since 1957, has no motivation to purposely sell cheap junk that would damage their reputation.

I have used gobs and gobs of aftermarket parts over they years and have never had a problem--IF you buy from one of the "brand name" auto parts stores...

Clean MAF and throttle body. If the code doesn't go away, maybe try swapping with a friend who has a 2nd gen to narrow it down?

That's what I would have done. I am generally the last to suggest throwing parts at a problem but at times it's easier, and less costly in the long haul, to just replace the suspect part. Now ditch the K&N filter (all it does is increase intake noise) and you'll be all set...

I agree...the K&N phenomenon is an overpriced myth.
