I'm hoping for a new Tacoma... I would really like LED headlights but they aren't always ordered. Can the dealer add them to a new vehicle that initially didn't include them?

No but you can , they won’t use a conversion harness or splice the harness

The full LEDs are a factory option because the body harness in the engine bay is different, has a single connector vice multiple connectors for halogens. The wiring is some similar though that aftermarket conversion harness are available, couple forum members custom build them as well.

A dealer conversation is likely to be non-legal ebay modules put in the halogen housing.

The factory LED housing after the fact are also pricey, $600 each if you're lucky, MSRP is like $1000 each. A bit of pain too, gotta take part of the bumper loose to access screws - another reason it's a factory option vice port or dealer.

There are a lot of LED headlights that are plug and play with the harness that goes with it. VLED makes a good one, but a little pricey ($110). You can find others cheaper, but I have already replaced a lot of my lights with LEDs on my 2108 SR 4x4 DB that came with halogen lights. I love the interior LED lights. Just took about 30 minutes to replace the interior ones and less to do the backup lights.

I just added the oem led headlights to my truck this weekend. I ordered the lights from sparks toyota (about 640 a piece) I used chloekuo as a 5% off coupon and ordered the harness from @daveeasa. There is a good install video on here just Google search it. Pretty simple install, just be patient and careful separating the fender flare from the bumper cover.

Please check you State laws? From what I understand , it is against the laws to replace different kinds of lights. Either from Dot? Somewhere…
Just beware? If you get into a accident and one cause it the lighting you change? It can cost you?

I wanted to go to leds too. Decided best to buy a truck that comes from the factory with leds The upgrade Nissan pick-ups has leds , not the lower end models?

Leds are the way to go. If only they can make one for the toilet? So we can see where things go? Um ?
    Aloha

I would just do the swap yourself. Unless you already have a source for one that comes with LEDs factory installed, the swap is pretty easy and getting cheaper all the time. I think my swap ended up being under $1200 with the harnesses and tax included. You could even wait until some seasonal sales get under way and do it later this year to possibly get that savings even lower. It's not like you wont have headlights in the meantime.

I helped install a set on @Bertw192 's Taco. It was a piece of cake with @daveeasa 's harnesses. Even the bumper was pretty easy to remove, just worked on one side at a time.

I believe the statutes you are referencing are more along the lines of trying to prevent people (on paper) from putting LED headlights in halogen reflector housings, etc since they work on different principles.

Just be careful if the dealer tells you they installed (and charged a lot) LED headlights. I’ve read many a threads (ok maybe not many but a few) here where the dealer sold upgraded LED headlights and fog lights when all they did was put in a led bulb.

When I first bought my taco I wanted LED headlights and asked about this too. They told me it wasn't possible and I didn't understand why.

Flash forward many hours on this website, I learned that you need a conversion harness (halogen wiring to led) in order to install OEM LED Headlights on my tacoma. I have an added wrinkle too, I have an SR5 which doesn't have a native LED DRL strip and uses the turn signal as DRLS, so I had to contact @Puppypunter for a harness specific to SR5's.

If you dont want OEM LED headlights, Morimoto makes a solid LED headlight, and Tacomabeast makes an Alpharex LED Headlight (but they are cheap knockoffs). Ultimately I went with Morimoto Xb gen 2 LED Headlights which were 100% plug n play with my tacoma. Had to install them myself of course but I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

The laws for vehicles headlights and all the other lights, may vary State to State?
One lighting company I called kept saying for off roading only, but they will sell you what ever you want , to protect them selfs.

Best to call your local State vehicle department. About lighting regulations.
Hawaii use to have a law , any AFTERMARKETS lights , requires a cover on them, hence many covers had smiling faces. Not enforce anymore?

DOT regulations are the same across USA. Some states require you to cover off-road lights when on public streets but that's about it. Therefore as long as your lights have DOT stamp on them you're good to go.

Thank you for sharing that! Good to know. On the island of Oahu, any vehicle that has modifications , must go to the State Recon for approval before being allow for street driving. The island I live on , has no recon stations. But the police will ticket you if the the tires are sticking out of the fenders. Or lifted too high?

We are one of the few States that still requires a annual safety check inspections , I just paid $26.46.
No tires can be out inside of the fenders, Toyota dealer will not give you a safety check if lifted with out mud flaps.
Added note: Every Safety check station were giving by the State of Hawaii a computer tablet , they have to take multiple pictures of every vehicle, the front view, side views, back views, window tint readings, brakes lights on, etc.
    Aloha

Some people will take it too far? Reason for Safety check stations and Recon stations.
I wonder how many times he had been stop by the police? And how much he paid for the tickets?

A friend I I know had a Dodge Ram with a super high lift , with tires outside of the fenders, put on the factory tires and rims for safety check every year. A few years later, too many tickets and stops by the police, he sold it. He works as a parts man for the Dodge dealer, brought another Ram truck , but was more conservative this time.
