don't know if you found one yet but i got an Amazon cheepie for my last motorcycle trip, just for kicks and its horrible. Your knee will go right to the ground but laying on it will support you somewhat. Lesson I learned, just get a rtt. :) no I ment just get a quality air mattress. the Canadian tire ones , the blue ones are rally good but too big for small tents.

The wife and I have done a couple cross country (NE to SW) camping months. So about 40 nights "tent camping" out of the Softopper Taco.

We tried Air, foam, cells and others, We both settled on Therma-rest self inflating sleep pads. With a a moving blanket on the tent floor, and a foot print under the tent, these pads just work.
I'm a back sleeper but roll around a lot. She is a side sleeper.
I give the pad a puff or two after it self inflates for about 15 minutes.

"If I didn't hurt, how would I know I am alive?"

    Oh! 72 years young!

Hi, I end up getting 2 100$ Amazon mattresses, they are foam and self inflatable, proper for winter and summer.

They are fine but still figuring how to set how firm I want them.
I did use them on my 10,000km trip, over a plywood sheet platform

They can get quite firm just with the self inflation.
My buddy was happy enough with them.

I would not buy an air mattress, they are bound to fail or bounce around and you move

How thick is that thermarest though?

I used to use 2" and they become less efficient. Maybe I need to inflate them properly...
I now need at least 4" mattress

Thickness won't matter for heating. Might make it worse overall. The air directly under you will insulate but the rest will be cold. My air mattress is 12" thick but in winter, I forgo air mattresses for the most part

    Well, I can not say.

4 inches can mean different things to different people.

The therma-rests we are happy with are about 2 inches thick when inflated but not loaded. My bones hit the hard earth, just a little. But I sleep soundly.

Yeah. That's why i moved into the 4 inch ones, I started constantly hitting the ground with the 2" ones

same. It was spendy but I sleep as good or better than at home

it’s also by far the best I’ve used if you sleep on your side
