Hey everyone, i purchased my first tacoma recently and im having an extremely hard time finding a camper shell. Im planning on living out of my bed for a few months and just traveling around the country to see what our great nation has in store for me. Ive called every local shell dealer and i just keep getting the same answer "Its too old, we dont carry that. Good Luck." *click* . should i even keep trying? Is it hopeless? Please help

word of caution on selecting one is, while the beds are the same from regular cabs to extended cabs, the shape of the rear window area isn't so a cover for ext cab must be specific for an extended cab.

quite a few guys on this forum found out the hard way you cant just buy any top for a first gen long bed, it has to match the cab version to fit even though they are the exact same beds

What Keakar said. Caps for regular cab and extended cabs ARE DIFFERENT. Regular cab caps are harder to find since they're not as common.

see how the front of this cap is straight at the front, well on ext cab trucks it needs to be curved in order for it to fit because the back window bulges outward from the cab as seen in the picture below

so while you could put a regular cab top on an ext cab truck, it will leave a 3"-4" gap at the top if you do and if you tried to use an ext cab top on a regular cab truck it would hit the back of the cab before it reached the front of the bed rails.

I found my A.R.E. camper top on Craigslist. Lucky you, bummin' 'round the country. I can't get away for a trip like that, but I occasionally do some camping in my 1998 Tacoma. Here's a photo of my setup.

I did exactly what you are thinking. I found a decent high top for $450 in Pennsylvania / about two hours from home.

YES, you can put a regular cab cap on an extra cab. The actual bed fit is 100% but the mating angle at the back window is a little different. It actually allows a little more light in (which is good). Don't let anyone tell you they don't fit!

no one said it wouldn't fit, what I did say is, if you try to put an ext cab top onto a regular cab, it wont fit because it will hit the roof of the cab
