Wix for engine, K&N cleanable for cabin.

Do not put a K&N oiled filter in your engine.

What is the issue with the K&N oiled filter?

If you incorrectly clean and over-oil, it can effect your MAF and/or O2 sensors. I ran one for about 90 thousand miles with no issue. When I cleaned and oiled it for the 3rd time, since I was no longer towing, I sealed it in plastic and put it back on the shelf in my garage. I now use the Wix. I really dont see much difference.

For a cabin filter it doesn't matter as much and they use a different wetting agent that's safe for breathing.

    However...

For the Engine air filter; the oil that's used to pull some of the contaminants out of the passing the air (as the filter media itself is just 5 layers of cheese cloth you can see day light straight through the pin holes all over it where the holes line up which is it's own issue) but the oil wicks off the cheese cloth and is carried by the air surge past the very hot fine wire Mass Air Flow Sensor or MAF, where the oil almost instantly burns and turns to caked on carbon deposits on the fine wire which can itself become exothermic and break the wire destroying the rather expensive ($170) MAF or it can just accumulate on the wire used to measure oxygen content in the incoming air and greatly throw off the accuracy of the reading resulting in poor performance, poor mileage, poor response, and increased heat and wear on the engine.

The MAF is possibly the most critical single component in your engine's management, screwing with it's accuracy albeit accidentally, (or incidentally) by having an oiled K&N filter depositing oil onto it is not a good thing.

Yes they flow more air, but so would a screen door which is effectively all it does so it flows more grit too, directly into your engine damaging your management system in the process.

But K&N only has to make their 5hp claims! (Which have been independently bunked) and sell filters, the rest is on you. Many claim they can feel the difference (but for the butt dyno to truly notice an improvement 10% power increase is required and 5hp is not 10%) but that's largely due to going from a clogged old filter to a new filter, not the K&N specifically, I wager the same improvement vould be felt by a new WIX or OE paper filter.

Even if there was an improvement it will slowly drop off as the MAF dirtys up and it will happen so slow you'll not notice the issue till the Check Engine Light comes on for P0171 MAF code.

Yes they run K&N oiled filters in desert race trucks which is a huge claim of theirs, sounds great, except a desert truck only has to work for a day before the huge company behind it does a full million dollar rebuild.

Can you afford a monthly replacement of your MAF and an engine rebuild every 30k miles?

If you can fantastic, you're doing better than I, but either way I'd avoid a K&N engine air filter like the plague.

    -Former K&N air filter user.

God I wish this was a sticky, it's going to be a copyposta of mine now though.

    /End rant.

Auto stores are all about $20+ each for any brand.
Have used many Fram, Puralator, and Carquest (Advance) and all OK
Cabin I use cheap plain type as the fancy carbon ones got clogged faster and mess up the AC flow into the cabin.
Last time I got the Walmart Super Tech ones about $10-13 each even American made.

For the cabin air filter, use the cheapest piece of crap you can find. I had one of those activated charcoal, fancy schmancy ones for a couple of years and the main thing it manages to do, is restrict your air flow.
You just want to keep crap out of your blower motor.
This is just my opinion, but it's a good one.

I usually just put a couple of dryer sheets on top of the cabin air filter. My truck smells like fresh laundry.

I can tell you which brand I'll never buy again: Denso. It was sized about 1 mm too large for the airbox cover to go back on. Yes, I did double-check it was the correct part. Next time I'm at Auto Zone I'll just grab whatever generic they have.

Toyota air filter, cheap TYC cabin filters from Rock Auto (although the '05s didn't even come with cabin filters installed). I get enough pine stray and pine pollen in them that it's not worth spending more, especially when I have the windows down when possible anyways.
