Madsand says down. I agree, but didn't see a difference on either side of the Fram CF10285 for the RAV4.
I'm 70, so those younger eyes are probably correct.

The fan is right below the filter if you peek into the slot you pulled it from. This type of fan (blower) pulls air into itself through its round front, and blows it out the sides and through the vehicles ducting. The arrow should point down. Arrows on filters almost always signify airflow direction.

If you look past the dead mouselings, underneath the nesting material, you can just see the cabin air filter.

Flip it over once a week and it will theoretically last forever.

It 100% depends on the filter.

Some filters (like Toyota) will say install with this arrow pointing up, all Toyotas have the filter installed with the arrow pointing up.

Some aftermarket filters follow Toyota’s method, some instead have an “airflow direction” label. If the arrow is pointing in the airflow direction it needs to point down.

It's OK if you put it in the wrong direction, nothing is going to break.
But if you clean and reuse an old filter, be sure you put it in the same way it was used before :D

I see I am not the only one that marks their filters with the date. I caught a dealer(not Toyota) on this before. I have always marked my filters and one time they told me I need a new air filter when I had just put one in the day before going to the dealership. I declined and never went back to them and told everyone I work with do not use them for anything, not even to buy a new car.

I marked my oil filter before using the free oil change..First and last time that I did this.I confronted the dealer service advisor. He said that it was a mistake and nothing was done..no shit!..I left with all of the oil and filters for the "free" oil changes.

oooo bonus.....this filter already comes with foreign materials, says so right there on it. I guess if it comes dirty you won't be able to tell the difference years later.

I'd grab my kid (or a neighbor's kid) and ask them to stand in front of me, then I'd blow through the filter into their face, first one way then the other. Then ask which one felt more breath pressure and you have your answer!

Cabin filters, unlike engine air filters, often have time intervals and are not just replaced when they are dirty. The main reason for this is that they are electrostatically charged, which loses effectiveness over time.

So often, if there is no history of a dealer replacing a cabin filter, it will get called due to time without looking at it.

Of course, I have no idea what the dealer actually told you, but that's the reason this can sometimes happen. It will also happen for coolant, brake fluid, other fluids, etc., as well.

Think of it this way. Would you think it was designed to blow dirty air and particulates THROUGH your blower motor or pass clean air with no particulates through your blower motor?

Stock. Only air lift air backs in the back
Ok I’m brand new as of today and right now to the forum. After so many back and fourth comments I figured I would just remove everything and turn the dam truck and fan on. Just to confirm. AIR FLOW GOES DOWN. As I turned on the fan I placed an envelope over the blower and she sucks hard down.
Conclusion. This side up stickers on air filters are because the filter was designed for that vehicle or are manufacture filters. Air flow direction arrows should be down on 3rd gen tacomas. Just FYI and I hope this helps.

Also, you don’t want to pull debris through the fan. The filter cleans the air as it is being pulled through the filter and then the blower.
