Any tips to dealing with the finance company and what trouble they usually have?

If I use Toyota Financial Services, will they be more familiar and hence easier for me to deal with?

You just have to be patient mostly. Sometimes the dealer's don't send the title to the finance company for awhile. Last motorcycle I bought, the temporary tag ran out and it took two months after that before the California DMV got the title. California won't give you tags until they have the title in their possession
and that is what out of state finance companies sometimes don't understand. Toyota Financial Services I would bet you will be fine.

    thanks
a few follow up questions for you, if you have a sec

1)is the process of the dealership sending the check for taxes to my local DMV fast?

2)can I go to the DMV right after getting my truck across state lines, or would I need to wait a bit for some documentation to be sent from the dealer to the DMV

    3) Texas is a state that does not really care for emission laws...however, my truck has the “50 state emissions” note on the sticker— is this what The CA DMV is referring to when it says that the vehicle
Will need to be California emissions compliant (does Toyota even make Tacoma’s that aren’t CA compliant?)

You can go to the DMV right away to pay for your tags, no problem. You are not going to get your tags right away but they will take your money. You will need to go to smog and get that sent in and since it is a truck you will need a weight certificate (you can easily get that a public scales.) Then you get a California temporary tag. After the California DMV receives the required documentation they are suppose to send you a notice in the mail. You take the notice, I have never received one of these in the mail, and go to the DMV to get your plates! Some dealers from Nevada it has gone smooth. Some dealers it has been a nightmare.

    Thanks for the response!

did you have to obtain the title from the financing agency you financed with and give it to the DMV ir somethin? How does that process work?

    >>> As usual, he lender will hold the title until paid off... Dealers typically use national lenders - if this is not the case, you should be able to discuss with them. Are you pursuing financing directly? (Not through the dealer?)

Also, is the “50 state emissions” option on the Tacoma, the thing the DMV is referring to when it says that it requires that the vehicle be “certified to meet CA smog laws?” Realllllllly wouldn’t wanna buy this thing and find out that I can’t even register it here, lol

    >>> You are safe there... Tacos are 50 state emissions from the factory. No worries. Will still need to do smog check - DMV stated that his was required in case the mechanicals were changed between purchase and registration...

Go for it! - Good luck!

    A few.
Ive done this a few times. I live in PA and purchased vehicles in OH. You pay sales tax % for the state and county you live in. I would then recieve the OH title and a check for the sales tax amount, which I then would have to take to a local notary service and have it transferred to PA and then thePA title would get sent to the lienholder. I would also need to get a PA state inspection/ emissions test done which the dealer would reimburse me for.

I was looking at purchasing a truck from a CA dealer and registering it in OR right away to avoid the CA sales tax (Oregon doesn't have sales tax). They told me that the only way to do that was if they shipped it to the Oregon border and I went and picked it up there after bought it.

    I concur with the above...
The dealer sent me a duplicate document package via FedEx, same as they sent to the DMV - so I know they have it now. It took them about a month. They included a note of apology to the DMV for the delay as they apparently had covid issues and were short handed on the dealer's title department staff...
You can request that they do this also in your case - it is nice to know.

Did not have to pay double taxes. If you do have to pay taxes in the purchasing state you would just have to pay the difference to California if that makes sense. I did need a temp registration to drive it out of the state though. Regarding registration the dealership handled the paperwork which was a little extra step on their part but nothing too crazy if they know what they're doing. The only kind of hassle on your side will be doing a VIN verification to get into the California DMV system. You can go to the DMV itself but with Covid I'm sure it's an even bigger PITA. What I did that I strongly suggest is using AAA and going through their DMV services to do the verification, registration, and get the plates. Even if you dont have a membership its well worth the $56 for the year and you can use it for other stuff. Let me know if you have any additional questions.
