I just bought a 2017 Double Cab Long Bed TRD OffRoad 4x4 and everything is great, besides the sluggish accelerator. That’s is besides the point. Anyways, while in reverse and turning simultaneously, I get a slight bump/jerk from the front end. I looked like an idiot in the Costco parking lot constantly going from the parking spot to the middle of the road. Needless to say I read the brake pads by design are a bit smaller than the housing they reside in. Therefore when the truck is used to braking in the forward motion, the brake pads are accustomed in that position. While reversing the pads move backwards. As stated earlier, that is only what I have read. Does anyone have any insight and/or solutions to this problem.? Thanks.!

Are you in 4HI? Smooth pressure on the pedal should result in constant and smooth movement in 2HI.

I am in 2HI. I release the brake pedal to reverse a bit, when applying again while turning is when this occurs.

New one to me. My first thought was 4HI.

Pads wouldn’t do it. Make sure your caliper is tightened to the truck. Ive been in a ranger that had its brakes serviced recently...techs didn’t torque the caliper down and one bolt fell out and other one was hanging in the caliper after the assembly fell off in traffic. Took about 1500 miles to happen. That would explain a clunk in reverse.

One or both of your front auto locking hubs may be stuck locked too. Are you somewhere ridiculously cold?

It surges because the truck wasn't warmed up, and turning the wheel makes the RPM increase to compensate for the power steering pump load..

When its hot it should go away..

I’m having the same problem but only when reversing and turning on a snow covered surface, which offers some resistance. I’m in 2hi but it ‘feels’ like it could be in 4hi.

The first time I noticed it the temp was -30c and had been like that for a few days. If cold like that is sticking the hubs will they unstick when it warms up? There is no problem inside my heated parking garage.

Could be anti-skid kicking in if you are slipping in 2HI.

If you're in a snowy place, it could just be the snow compacting under the tires! It will give a similar sound and feel to binding in 4WD.

    THIS IS Correct!!!
There is a TSB out for the excessive surging when turning the steering wheel the slightest amount. I had this on my truck and the TSB took care of it. It happens in Forward as well as reverse.
Not saying this is positively the OP's problem, but some 3rd gens show this problem. When diagnosing this problem on my truck at the dealer -the area service rep tested three trucks other than mine (new ones) and 2 of 3 had the same issue. He left (back to KC mo.) and about 7-8 months later there was a TSB that popped up. It solved my surging issues.
Also not sure if they addressed this issue with the 19's.

    Search "Tacoma pad slap".
Fixes can include; new pins, greasing pins, greasing the backside of the pad, replacing or adding retainer springs. Sometimes none of it works.

That's exactly what's been happening. Is this good? Not good? Any fix for this? I've been ignoring it since it doesn't happen other that on compacted snow.

This sounds like the most logical diagnosis. Problem is, it does it even backing into a parking spot after driving a few miles.

If you apply brake and gas at the same time, the gas input will be canceled.

Let off the brake, and if your foot is still in the throttle, the truck will surge. It is common to ride the brake while reversing, this this is more common when reversing.

I do not have my foot on both pedals. Just releasing the brake and turning. The surge is not violent at all.! Actually very faint but I know it is there. I live in the California valley, yes it gets colder than other parts of CA but not below 25F. No snow, no mud, just pavement.

-22f is probably cold enough to cause the hubs to stick, but not for sure. If that’s what’s happening, yes, warming it up by driving or via weather/etc will solve the issue

I mean it's normal given the circumstances. It's like when you drive over a speedbump your truck will bounce, it's neither good nor bad just physics ;)
