I have an opportunity to purchase a front plate bumper for my 3rd gen with full tubing for a fantastic price, but there is a catch. It is made for a 1 inch body lift. I am considering a few options of what to do if I buy the bumper:

    1. just do a 1 inch body lift (concern of funny looks due to frame mounted sliders, rear bumper gap, and my tires already look a little small)

    2. weld some plate steel onto the bumper's frame plates and re-drill mounting holes to fit with stock body mounts. (concern of decreased strength to the bumper, and pushing the bumper slightly forward due to thickened frame plates might look funny)

    3. I'm already chopping my stock bumper to fit the new one (thanks for that design toyota), so in theory, I could just cut one inch higher and mount it as is. (concern of hoops being too high and other fitment issues with the body beyond the already needed chop.

What do y'all think the best option would be? Here is a picture of the bumper mounted to a truck with a one inch body lift20171108_130021.jpg

Do the body lift and work your way up to bigger tyres.

Have you seen any of these trucks with the BL and standard slider? I know I can relocate the rear bumper and eventually up my tires to fix those problems, but Im a little worried about slider gap

I have one in the parking lot right now! Honestly, if you are parked right next to someone with the same exact slider you''ll notice the difference, but 10' back or on it's own, you can't tell.
Some of the "purists" on here get all shitty about body lifts, but I have one, and I'm happy with mine. The rear bumper is actually more annoying, but that's just a time thing to fix.

Thanks! if you have any, I'd love to see a picture of how the sliders look as your truck sits.

Why dont you just buy a full plate bumper that doesnt require 1" body lift?

Well you get what you pay for. I can't help ya here as I recommend not doing any of the options above. Will save you a lot of time/hassle just saving up some extra cash for bolt on design. Seems to be a poorly designed bumper if it requires a 1" body lift.

Best of luck though, post up pics after youre done for others to reference if this comes up again.

I vote option 2. Even if you pay a shop to cut off the original mounting plates and weld new ones it shouldn't be more than 1-2 hrs of labor.

It's a one off bumper that was previously run on a truck that had a 1 inch body lift. The standard bumper they will soon offer will not require a body lift.

Do you know if cutting off the mounting plates a welding new ones on would significantly decrease the strength of the bumper?

1 inch body lifts arent bad. Its the 3 inch ones that are sketchy

that's why I'm willing to do it. Would never do more than 1 inch though. So my only concern with the BL is goofy looks

I don't see how it would.. Provided that the original weld is good. You're going to want to bevel the vertical pieces anyway to get a good fillet and in doing so you should remove the weld that's there already.

I wouldn't personally re-use the plates that bolt to the truck frame though

Thanks! I only took a quick glance at the bumper when I saw it and if I recall correctly the frame plate on the bumper was actually just a 90 degree bend in the steel, not a welded joint. But if it was originally welded there, that would 100% be my best option

Help me out here, forgive me if this comes off the wrong way but it seems odd to me that you would modify your whole truck for an accessory. Is there a way you can modify the mounting plates on the bumper and make other mods needed? I feel like a fab shop should be able to make that bumper fit to you truck versus vice versa.

I'm kind of leaning Option 2

That's exactly what I'm trying to decide on. I don't see a 1in BL as a big deal, especially because the price of this bumper plus the BL would still be hundreds less than a new cbi/pelfrey bumper. However, I would love to modify the bumper instead if I can find a way to do it that retains the original strength of the bumper. As it was built, the frame mounting plates sit 1 inch lower than would be required for mounting to a stock body height. The plates are not tall enough to just drill a new hole 1 inch above the original. Therefore I was considering either removing the original mounting plate and welding it higher, or welding a larger, taller plate in its place, or welding more steel to the original mounting plate that extends in height above it. Hopefully that all makes sense

1" body lift is not bad. If I were in your shoes I would modify the bumper. I'm no welder so I would take it a local offroad shop to fix for me, they can measure and weld and would probably cost the same as a body lift.

Just don't do the body lift? That seems like the easiest option

That is likely the way I'm gonna go with it. Thanks for the input!
